I used to just close the damn things, but they're getting out of hand. It seems that every site has a pop-up or worse yet, a pop-under.

Anybody using one that is worth installing? Will it screw anything up upon installation?

I use IE in XP. Thanks

Pop-up stopper works excellent. The only downside is you have to hold down controll every time you want to open a new window.
Other than that it's excellent...never got a single pop-up after I installed it.
Even when I went whoring on the porno web-ring.:D

Free Surfer, by far the best I've used. It kills popups, while allowing you to open links in new windows.

This one is the one I use and definetly is very good. Stops all kinds of stuff. Although lately i have noticed popups (like that damn gator thing) so i downloaded AdAware and found all this adware on my computer. Get that too, it helps.

Since nobody has mentioned it yet, you could try Smasher. It's not freeware, but will cost you about $19.95. However, in addition to killing pop-ups, it will also manage cookies for you.

Ad-Aware IS great. I install it on friend's machines and both them & me are amazed in the crap that shows up. Good product.

I appreciate all the suggestions. I'm going to try these and I'll let you know how they worked for me. I didn't want to try out garbage with zero feedback on a new reformat/install.

pop-up killer pro works excellently for me. it keeps all the unwanted pop ups away while the ones i want somehow pop up miraculously without me ever having to tell it what to do. i don't know how it knows...but it works 95% of the time.

I've used the panicware pop up stopper for a long time now and love it, but lately i've been getting pop ups on different sites, plus sometimes it will keep closing a window I try to open, or even if I open a new window and type in www.gamespy.com, it will automatically close it..it gets annoying when it does it five times in a row!
