English essays are NEVER the same as history/social science essays. Your first mistake is writing like they are.

Other than that, yes, I have had that happen. The first time was my junior year of high school when we had this huge research paper we spent months on and countless drafts. Gave me the lowest B he could and when I asked to talk to him about it he straight up said how if someone else had written the same paper he would have given them an A, but he felt I didn't work up to my potential and that's why I got the low B. :|

That's life though. Now I realize it didn't really matter. Most recently in my theater class the professor would constantly give me lower grades than some of the people who did terrible which was really frustrating. We had to create a character and present them in a 2 minute solo scene as our final project. I did someone that actually exists for the biography, one of my friends from Sacramento, and I got my paper back and it was a B and said "Your character is inconsistent." Apparently my friend is an inconsistent person then.

mine was the same. It changed for AP courses (I think it was 88-100) since our GPA was not weighted.

Any English teachers here, maybe you can answer this one for me. Had a history class where the professor had us do an essay on various famous figures and particular noteable events each was involved with. I think I had John Adams or somebody like that. So the whole class hands in their essays and the next class the professor flips out at us. Accuses us all of being plagiarists. When he finally settled down enough to elaborate, apparently it was a problem with the way we were all doing our footnotes or parenthetical documentation, depending which you chose. Each person had of course put in the intro a little on the background of their famous person. Date of birth, place of origin, schooling, etc. Apparently he not only expected that the source of this be documented in our bibliography(which all of us had done) but he also expected footnotes or parenthetical references right there in the essay text. I'd been writing essays for quite a while and I've never had any teacher, professor or whatever complain about this. And to outright accuse us all of plagiary really pissed me off.
My understanding of footnotes/parenthetical documentation is that they are necessary when quoting from one of your sources. If you take factual information about a person from a source or may even be common knowledge to you there's no need for an inline acknowledgement of the source. If you got it from a reference book, then by all means list the reference book in your works cited or bibliography. Otherwise your essay's intro is going to be a jumbled mass of asterisks or parentheses making it very hard to follow. Was this guy an idiot or am I wrong?

Another thing is that he briefly went over which format for citation MLA or APA and no one took any notes, I should have remembered or wrote it down. I tried finding it on the handout and it wasn't on there. I got marked down not because my paper's content, puncuation, or grammar was bad but because I used APA format (god forbid) and 2 paragraph intro which it really needed. Hella I could have just took out the space and he probably wouldnt have known better. For me was how vague he is for the presentation, I did exactly what he did on there but apparently it was "sufficient".

Grading scale was 93-100 for me too. Honors classes you got 90-100. There were no bullshit 4.5 GPA's.

It probably doesn't make you feel any better Eomer, but I wrote an essay about patriotism or something that got a 90 in my senior English class, lower than her pet students, and then she made us submit them to a contest, where it got 2nd place in the state.

i got A's all throughout high school and college in English and grammar and write completely different here than i would in a school paper. i don't need to take my time here and given the audience, i really don't care. i considering some of the mistakes he's made here are pretty minor its unfair to assume he makes the same mistakes when writing an actual paper for a class.

You're making comments about grammar suggesting that you feel that anyone who insists on proper grammar is a "grammar nazi."
You had the wrong number of paragraphs in your introduction.

Then, in the OP, you have several extremely obvious errors when trying to complain about the grading?
Misspelled: pointless (pointles), frustrated (fruastrated), AP (ap), honor (hounor), misuse of than/then.

And, we're supposed to accept at face value that the mistakes in your paper are "dumb minor things"??

Sorry, you're probably lucky to have even gotten 90%. But, as others have said, politely ask the teacher why your grade was lower than you expected. If it was a math or physics paper being written for one of my classes, I'd probably deduct at least 10 points for using the wrong format, poor grammar, spelling mistakes, etc.
