Need a nice laptop

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good laptop? I need to get one soon, and am wondering if anyone here has had any experience with laptops at all. I don't want any ultra-laptops, just something around $2500 or less.
What would be even better than personal experience is a link to somewhere that reviews them.

Here's something interesting. Go to http://www.laptop.net. 🙂

I think ZDnet recommended the Dell Inspiron5000 or something like that. The HP Omnibook also got good reviews. If you don't have a lot of dough to spend the Quantex notebooks might be a good choice. I only know one person who ever bought a Quatex though and it came DOA.

Anybody know when there will be better graphics chipsets available, or when better screens will be available on laptops?
I will be able to hold off on getting a laptop for a bit, but I am going to need one for college. I would much rather see a mobile Nvidia chipset in my laptop than a *shudder* S3 or even the OK ATI ones in most notebooks now. I wouldn't ever play FPS games on it, but it would be nice to have if I am desparate.

I just bought a Compaq and am extreemly happy with it. The graphice chipset does a pretty good job and is configurable from 4 Mb to 8 Mb in the Bios. Go for the 15" TFT latest wazoo display and get at least 128 Mb RAM. Mine has a 500MHZ AMD processor but with your budget there is no reason not to go with a PIII. DVD works really well, but you may want to make sure you get one with the TV out.

At work I have a Toshiba Tecra. 366 Mhz PII. It's OK but I like my Compaq alot better. I know many people do not like Compaq but I've had good luck and am happy. (can't build a notebook)

I have an Omnibook that I got back when Mobshop have the 20% coupons. It cost me like $1050 shipped and I'm pretty happy with it. If I were you I would definitely check out the Sony Vaio that mobshop carry right now. If there's a 20% coupons floating around you might end up with a good deal but don't take my word for it.
