Need a Newbie linux distro.

OK, so I want to start a machine running Linux, mainly just to play around with, learn how the OS works compared to windows, and just generally educate myself better about IT in general.

anyway, I need suggestion on a newbie friendly (as far as Linux goes) flavor. I was thinking SUSE 10.1, but I don't know enough about the other distro's to make an informed choice. also, a good refernce (book, website, whatever) for getting introduced to the OS and how to operate it would be helpful too.
