Need a new wireless mouse...Logitech?

Sadly, the life of my treasured Logitech MX700 came to an end today with a tragic soda spill. <moment of silence>

So that means I need a new mouse! I'm looking for something wireless and rechargeable (rechargeable AA's are no good, I want something with a cradle). Since my old Logitech was so good to me, I've been looking at their new line of mice, and was wondering if anyone had any experiences with either of the below mice:

Logitech MX1000
Logitech MX Revolution

The G7 Laser Cordless also looks really nice, and I love that the charger is separate from the receiver, so it's portable with my laptop, but not being a gamer, I can't really give up the extra buttons for the DPI control.

Any experiences with these Logitech mice? Should I defect to the Microsoft camp?

Also, does BestBuy or CompUSA have these mice "out of box" on in store displays so I can go feel them before I buy?

Thanks for your valuable insight AT, as always.

What are you going to be using the mouse for? The only wireless mouse suitable for fast paced gaming is the g7 laser, but the others, specifically the mx1000 are great for general use.
For gaming: g7
For general use: mx1000
The revolution is nothing special, kinda overpriced too. I've been to bestbuy and they have the g5, mx1000, and mx518 on display, but I've never seen a g7 there out. Staples has them out though... IDK about near you.

Well I'm not really a gamer, which is another reason the G7 isn't really worth it to me.

The other plus to the Revolution over the MX 1000 is that the Revolution has the two part cradle/charager, rather than the all in one base.

Hrmm...anyone else used either of them?

I'm using a revolution right now. The scroll wheel FLIES through long docs when flicked because the motor inside releases the detent. That's a great concept. It's useless for southpaws, so that's something to think about.. :) I really wish the setpoint software allowed the back button to be remapped to doubleclick. This must be an oversight by the programmers.

The G7 is good but the wheel isn't so great and the battery life is horrible. I usually have to change packs at LEAST once a day.

The MX1000 is heavy and lags badly compared to either the G7/Revolution.

A heavy mouse can be a good thing:D If guess if you're not a gamer then you could consider it, but if you're a righty and like the feel of the revolution (it is curvatious) then go for it. It is $70 though...

Yeah I'm a righty, so thats the only reason we're even gonna talk about these mice :) I feel bad for the lefties though, Logitech makes great mice, but the best are righty only...

I've pretty much ruled out the G7, I just don't need that kind of DPI control and response time at the cost of extra buttons and battery life...

What do you think of the little scroll wheel on the side of the mouse? Weird? Does your thumb rest on it or on the casing of the mouse? This is in reference to the Revolution of course.

I have to reach for it - I have it set for zooming. The default is flipping pages. That works too. I have yet to try it in games.

So - all things considered - would you recommend the Revolution or the mx1000?

I haven't had the Revolution long enough to make a determination of what battery life is like. Ergonomics and function - the Revolution has it all over the MX1000.

OK cool. Last question - can you remap the "Quick Search" button on the top of the mouse to another function?

Yes you can. I changed mine to double click and am starting to get used to it. :)

i have mx700+mx1000. i hate the way the mx1000 buttons are, the thumb and ones flanking the wheel are one peice of plastic that see saw on a hinge, i don't like the feel of that kind of stuff, feels cheap and less responsive. plus 3 buttons on the thumb area is not as good as the 2 on the mx700/revolution. too easy to hit the center one by accident, and well in games it just makes it useless too:p if i were not a gamer i'd go revolution instead of mx1000/g7. my gripe with the g7 is the single thumb button, its a step back from the mx700. the mx1000 just sorta feels sorta cheap compared to mx700/revolution cuz of the large clunky plastic buttons and for some reason i just like the button clicks better on the 700:p i've heard the g7+ generation has better wireless response than the mx1000, so no point buying older stuff now. the revolutions buttons seem neat, and the build quality from what i've seen is very good.

as for battery life, the revolution should be like the mx1000 or better. mx1000 battery does last a long time, atleast twice what the mx700 did. though the 700 came with 1800mah? batteries, its slightly better now that i shoved 2400mah in. still i've never gone more than 3 days without sticking the mx1000 in its cradle, i've yet to see the battery meter drop more than one notch. mx700 owners are used to seeing that blinking red led though;)

You can buy another Logitech mouse, but I never will. If you aren't using x64, they will probably work fine, but due to the problems that I have had with the MX610, which Logitech tells me that I'm out of luck on, and will have to live with...which can't happen, when I get ready for another mouse, I shall look to another brand...probably Microsoft (shudder!).

MX1000

I hated the G7. Battery life was very poor and I disliked the surface of the mouse.

I have the MX1000. I use it for general use and gaming. For me personally, this is the bes mouse that I have ever owned. It fits my hand perfectly, the buttons are easy to access. All around I would recommend the MX1000. It also has a long battery life and it charges fast. It's a can't miss.

As always, I have to recommend the MX610. It has a decent shape that's more similar to the MX700 than you might think, lots of very useful buttons, and incredible battery life, especially on a pair of lithium AA batteries.

Not rechargeable in a cradle though... :(

Oh, I see. I missed that part. Sorry.

Why exactly do you need to have rechargeable batteries and a cradle, though? Using lithium ion AA batteries in the MX610 (and you only actually need one to run it) you get a very lightweight mouse that will probably last a good six months on a single set. You really don't need to worry about charging it.

hm the mobile probably sacrifices some smoothness for its battery life though. not shocking jerky i bet, but more like previous opticals than the gaming laser mouse responsiveness is probably what was compromised for the battery life

Well I'm a heavy mouse user, so in my experience the batteries haven't lasted close to 6 months...more like a few weeks. And eventually the cost of batteries adds up...
