a kinetic is a quartz watch. it has a small dynamo inside that stores potential in a capacitor. that potential drives the microcontroller responsible for the watch.

an automatic has a spring inside that gets wound by a weight moving back and forth with the motion of your hand. the spring stores the potential that drives the watch mechanism.

Considering your edit to the original post, go look at Chronograph.com, which is the best online store for midrange Japanese automatic watches IMO.

If you find a watch you like, don't worry about the strap - they are easily changed. I like leather straps and bracelets in cool weather, but in summer I mostly wear NATO nylon straps, which I find stay the coolest and most comfortable.

check out the skagen line - they make some good stuff that is pretty light and thin

personally, i love my seiko kinetic, but its really heavy (not ti) so it wouldn't fit your wants

Given your increased budget, I strongly recommend you take a look at the Hamilton Khaki series. They are very handsome IMO, have high-quality ETA Swiss auto movements, and the newer ones have sapphire crystals. I think they're a killer deal.

Does mechanical means that I have to manually wind it every time it dies?

Given otherwise identical quality standards, a 23 Jewel movement will be superior to a 21 Jewel movement. However, with any decent watch, the difference will not be noticed in everyday use. And a very high quality 17 Jewel movement will still be better than a low-quality 23 Jewel movement.

You can't go wrong with that Seiko, and you can probably find it even cheaper on the 'Bay. The Khaki is a slightly higher-end watch that may not suit your needs any better. That said, it will hold its value well, and I really like this handsome face. If you keep your eyes peeled on eBay you can find a good deal on one. Here was one that sold for $195 shipped.

Who'd know shopping a watch can be so difficult

Now I'm having second thoughts about getting an automatic.. I didn't know they lose accuracy by the seconds everyday, or that the spring can only hold just 1-2 days of power

I might get the Skagen later as dress watch.. but for now I'll just get an everyday beater watch

I used to get wet dreams about getting these kinda watches when I was like 8

I HAD one... I had so much fun changing the channel on the TV in class when we were supposed to be watching a video... but I busted up laughing one time and got caught and the watch was in my teacher's drawr for the rest of the year, and when I got it back at the end of the year the battery was dead. :(
