Well, I've had this nice Wenger Swiss Military watch for a couple years, and recently I've been doing a lot of diving with it. Unfortunately the salt water has not gone over so well with its stainless steel body. :( Its a shame, I really loved that watch. Anyway, I have narrowed down my search to two choices but can't figure out which one I ought to buy.

Swiss Army Officer LS Ratchet

Citzen Professional Diver

Which is better? These seem to be the advantages of each one so far:

Citizen:
Eco-Drive, never needs a battery
Titanium, won't corrode as easily

Swiss Army:
Made in Switzerland
Cheaper

And I doubt I would pay $450 for a watch ... I had never used a watch so far in my life.

Citizen dude, no doubt. Of course this IS coming from a guy who only spent 60 on his. But I like the the citizen better anyway. :)

A Timex digital will cost you 'bout $20. I've had mine for about 8 years, the battery was only supposed to last 7 years..... (knock on wood) -kd5-

I have a digital watch. I dont wear it much though, it just seems like my analog watch had a little bit more elegance. Only reservation I have about the new swiss one is that its stainless steel, and look what happened to my original stainless steel swiss.

Also, I looked at some other watches like the Movados, but I am a very picky person and couldnt seem to find a design I liked. The main reason I liked my old swiss watch was because I simply loved the design.

I wonder if anyone knows a way to prevent stainless steel from corroding in salt water so quickly? Its too bad Swiss Army doesn't have any watch models made from the Victorinox Stainless Steel that they use in their knives. I suppose the watches would be pretty heavy but they'd be durable as hell.

I don't think I want fossil. I have a couple friends that had them and they broke pretty quickly. Also, they seem a little too trendy for me.

wenger is not swiss army. it has a very similar logo but real swiss army is victorinox. if it says victorinox on it its swiss army. the website linked is actual victorinox. my roommate has a wenger, calls it a swiss army. when i tell him hes wrong he gets pissy and asks why people should be right and i tell him its the biggest market failure.

If you're gonna be using this watch while diving, then I would go for the cheaper and mpre ruggid. Timex, Swiss army, maybe even that citizen. But if you're looking for looks, there are many good looking watches out there.

go with citizen, my dad was a watchmaker for 27 years, so I know. My personal preference? Seiko. Movado and Omega are also good. I'd stick with those 4 at this price level

Dont worry Elfenix I am aware of the differences. The victorinox people use a shield logo with the swiss cross on it, while the Wenger people just use a kind of box with rounded edges and the swiss cross on it. As for which company makes better watches I have no idea.

Oh no the poll's tied! What will I do !??

Astriy, as someone who is the son of a watchmaker, could you explain to me what the subtle differences between some of these companies are and what makes which a better company?

the basic watch design is almost uniform unless you go with a kinetic watch or something, so the difference would be the quality of materials used - mainly composition of metals in the gears, craftsmanship - how uniform the gears are, the seals, etc., and overall design - how well it keeps time. All of these companies have been around for a while and pretty much perfected the basic design, so pick a good company and go with a design you like.
Heh, wanna know of an easy way to spot a fake rolex from a distance? the second hand on a fake will move in 1- or 1/2 sec increments, a real rolex's second hand would have a a smooth motion with no visible increments. that's an easy way to spot a crappy watch.

I love my Rolex Yachtmaster. It makes me feel special.

;)

Oops.. frogot to vote in my opinion, sorry :).

If you have the money, I would buy the citizen, it looks a bit more elegant with the gold (even if it is fake :)) etc. while the swiss only holds stainless steel.

I also think citizen seems to be more of a brand name, and the shield thing in the middle of the swiss watch looks kinda weird.
