My old one bit the dust a few months ago, and I've just never gotten around to replacing it. I would like to get a new one soon, though. Any suggestions? I'm looking to spend $100 or less, and probably pick it up this weekend. Only real specifics I'm looking for are Hi-Fi (stereo) sound and something that's fairly easy to program. Any help would be appreciated.

I'll sell ya my Sanyo 4-head HiFi. It's only seen about 5 hours of use. Once to watch Slingblade, and then I fastforwarded through the last WWF PPV (I hate watching that stuff but I promised someone I would watch it - FF through it counts, right? :p)

No thanks. I'll just pick up a new one around here :)

Anybody else?

CostCo has some nice Sony and Panasonic 4 head hi-fi stereo VCRs with remotes for under $100.

There are no Costcos in St. Louis, as far as I know :( . Thanks for the tip anyway, Rossman.

Thanks fatbaby. That panasonic you pointed out was on my short list; I can get it at work even cheaper. Just wanted to see what other people thought. I also agree that DVDs are probably killing VCRs for the most part; there are two DVD players in my house right now (my DVD-ROM and my brother's Pioneer 5-disc). But a DVD player doesn't do me any good when I want to tape a TV show. My parents like to tape some stuff, too; that's the main reason I'm looking for one.

an aiw radeon 8500 with built in pvr will do that perfectly (and you'll benefit from it too!)
I don't like regular pvrs where you have to pay a monthly fee for the program guide and also their price: like $400 for 40 gigs now?

For a dirt cheap name brand with decent features the JVC HR-A57U can be purchased at Sears, Walmart, Kmart... everywhere for $79.00.

IMO, for most bang for the buck, last year's model of the JVC HR-S4800 can't be beat. Current price is $169.95. Feature for feature, this one kicks ass up and down:
  • Super VHS record/play
  • Super VHS ET
  • HiFi stereo playback for Dolby Pro Logic surround sound in your home theater system
  • MTS stereo reception
  • Active Video Calibration
  • 4 video heads
  • crystal-clear still frame and slow motion
  • flying erase head
  • insert editing
  • audio dubbing
  • VCR Plus+
  • cable box/DBS timer control
  • glow-in-the-dark multibrand remote control (operates most TVs, cable boxes and DBS)
  • shuttle control on unit
  • front-panel A/V inputs (including S-video)
  • Auto SP/EP recording
I'm surprised it's still available, so grab it while you can!

I like the JVC brand. I have an extra one that I've been using at work (I teach high school) for the last 5 or 6 years. It has been accidentally knocked off a 6' high shelf onto a concrete floor, dropped on same concrete floor when being carried, and battered and abused in a variety of ways that only teenagers can manage. It takes a licking and keeps on ticking. :)

montanafan, I've been noticing these things getting cheaper and cheaper in quality every year. They are truly disposable these days. Maybe that ain't so bad overall, but they are chintzy. I grabbed one of those JVC HR-S4800, because it seemed like a bargain feature-wise. The ones built like the old tanks have industrial grade prices to match!

Geez, I've bought cars for less than that! Mine's tough, but it didn't cost anything like that.

Hmmm, VCR's; I've heard of those. They were entertainment devices used by an ancient Mayan tribe, right? :p
