Looking these up now. The wire looks tempting.

Big no to game of thrones. I'm not into the fantasy stuff. More of real life situations or close enough.

But real life sucks.

Game of Thrones is all kinds of awesome.

IIRC, Burn Notice has a few seasons on Netflix instant already...and the show is still going.

Stuff I haven't seen listed yet:
The Newsroom -- HBO
House of Lies -- Showtime
Weeds -- Showtime
Castle -- ABC
Chuck -- NBC

Not exactly TV series, but mini series:
Band of Brothers -- HBO (also has Damian Lewis from Homeland)
State of Play -- BBC Mini Series, not the US movie

/agree with stuff others have said:
The League -- FX
Mad Men -- AMC
Boardwalk Empire -- HBO
Justified -- FX
Hell on Wheels -- TNT maybe?

I definitely think you should reconsider Game of Thrones. At least in the first two seasons, there is very very little fantasy stuff, as in pretty much none at all (only one thing comes to mind). Think of it more as a medieval political drama, or something.

It's more medieval than fantasy. Also, boobies.

If you look around you might find the television series "24" with Kieffer Sutherland for $125.00. I bought the 57 disc DVD set (8 Seasons) and watched it straight through for about 3 weeks, it was awesome.

The action is great and commercials totally wreck the show. This was my best DVD purchase and best time watching a television series.

Ooooh I forgot about this one! I can't check now since I haven't had a Netflix streaming sub since they doubled the prices for discs+steaming, but all the seasons used to be on instant streaming.

I could barely make it through season 2 of 24. It got to be pretty damn ridiculous.

Yeah same. Good to know; I will have to check this out.

KT

Each season is a distinct story, completely unrelated to the previous season. So far, AFAIK, the show has not even given us any reason to think they are in the same continuity. The show reuses actors, but they are playing different roles.

I liked Mad Men, Six Feet Under.

I'm watching Freaks and Geeks right now haha. I'm surprised I actually like it.

Community. But start with S01E06. You'll miss out on some back story, but the first 5 episodes are pretty much a different direction than the rest of the series.

I agree with a lot of the shows posted here, but Jersey Shore just had Last Jerzday last night Dumac and is, as of now, off the air. Don't worry though, Jenny and Snooks got a second season and Vinny has a new talk show where he has celebs come over to his mom's house and get the royal classical Italian family treatment. First up is Lil' Wayne!

Anyhow, I would say The Walking Dead is the most must see show going right now man. My wife and I skipped it when it first came on and we started watching it one night on Netflix. The next week we were watching 2-3 shows a night. I have seen some proclaim it's cheesiness or inconsistencies, but I found it to be very gripping after the first few episodes. As with anything it depends on your personal taste, but I was a skeptic of this show going in, and I watch every new episode the night they come on now.

Game of Thrones is also extremely good and I would certainly highly recommend that.

New Girl is hilarious. Yeah, I said it.

I also watch Two Broke Girls and The Mindy Project with my wife and they are very good shows as well.

Eastbound and Down is an all-time classic for me, love that show. I'm not sure if it is cancelled but you should be able to find it somewhere.

Newsroom on HBO is another show I almost forgot. Incredibly good show, I wouldn't and haven't missed a minute of it.

Dexter is also worth a watch, for sure, but it's on it's 8th season so you should start from the beginning. I started watching in season 2 and my wife brought me up to speed, but that is a series I would like to watch front to back. It is really great and truly interesting.

The League is also really good for a laugh. You have tons of great suggestions already in this thread. I threw out a few good wifey shows for ya, so you should be set for the next couple of...months, years?

Ditto on:

The Tudors
The Wire
The Killing

I would have recommended Mad Men, but it just fell apart in it's last season.
