The pearl is nice looking. Im not sure if i can justify spending the money on a smart phone though.

Do a lot more...than perhaps he needs?

If he's just going to be checking email, what exactly is the point of that "lot more"?

I went to the Cingular store yesteday and got to see the phones in person.

I asked to see the Blackjack first but the CSR said they didnt have any in stock at the time. He then pointed me in the direction of the Blackberry 8700. It seemed nice but was a little on the wide side. I asked to see the Pearl and that is a really nice phone. It has a great size but looks like it may be a bitch to type on. Plus it is not a 3G phone which I think I will need.

I then got to see the 8125 and that was also a little on the big side.

So I'm going to wait to see what the BJ looks like in person. Then it'll basically come down to that and the Pearl. I am worried about typing on that small keypad on the pearl and the lack of 3G but it is a great sized phone.

anyone else care to help?

Sounds like the Blackjack is perfect for you. I only got the pearl over the blackjack cause I prefered the Pearl's qwerty over the typical qwerty and i don't care about 3g. I've played with the Blackjack in person and it's a great size size phone. A tad larger than the pearl, but not any bigger than a RAZR.

I do a lot of email, so I need the fullsize QWERTY. For phone calls, I just pull out Ye Olde Bluetoothe Headsette and avoid having a brick on my ear.

I have the 8525 and it is great. I had the 8125 and MDA (T-Mobile) for a while. This phone is very similar but is faster with 3G.

I use mine with Exchange and a wireless ActiveSync. Highly recommended. My only gripe is that the battery life is not that great, but I understand that this is an issue with most 3G / EV-DO / high-speed wireless network phones.

cingular offers various data plans...

which plan do you need to browse and/or sent text msgs?

if you have a media bundle with txt msgs and x MB dowload, will you still be able to browse or do you actually need a data connect plan?

ok another update..........

went to the cingular store again and got to play around with the BJ, Pearl and 8525.

Impressions:

Blackjack: It was really small, had a nice feel but the screen was small and the kb was a little tough to type on.

Pearl: the middle scroll wheel thingie was a pain in the ass...it kinda had a mind of its own. I liked the size of the pearl over the BJ but didnt like the layout of the keypad and the scroll ball sucked.

8525: I absolutely loved the phone. It is a little on the large size but the sliding keypad is great. When the slider is opened the screen rotates so that you can type. Also when using word_mobile it would auto fill the words you were typing...pretty cool.

The one thing that is really killing me is the price. I do not do 2 year plans and the one year plan for the phones are like $349-479 or so. I'm hoping to find one on these forums or on ebay or something but I gotta say I was really impressed with the 8525.

I would be able to do that with the 8525, right? It is also a Win Mobile 3G phone.

It's pretty nice and cheap, but no 3G. I like that it can sync with just about anything...Good, Blackberry Connect, Exchange ActiveSync, XPress Mail.
