Need a new RPG?

Until recently I was mainly a fps shooter or racing fan, mainly due to the fast pace. However, recently I picked up oblivion and instantly loved the immersed feel I got from the quests. I now need another game along oblivion's line. I have been eye balling "The Witcher" but don't know to pull the trigger or not.

The witcher's combat is fairly boring, its more about the dialogue and the humongous main quest. If your looking for something that kicks ass and is like oblivion, I'd recommend Fallout 3. Many people refer to it as Oblivion with guns, I never played Oblivion so I dunno.

My personal opinion on the witcher is that it's good in some ways but not worth the money. I quit playing about 1/2 way in.

Good to about the witcher. Yea I have been playing Fallout 3 also, but for some reason I just really like the feel of the "magic" games. I don't know what it is but it seems more satisfying to light someone on fire with a spell and then impale them with an arrow, than to just shoot them. lol

Not an RPG in its purest form, but you might end up liking Dark Messiah, which in my opinion has been vastly underrated. It's running under a modified version of the Source engine (Half-Life 2, etc), it's a first-person-shooter, but there's fantasy and RPG element thrown in to make what I thought was a very fun mixture, it's one of the rare FPS games I've beaten many times rather than just one or two times only to get bored of it after, and being able to kick your foes and impale them on a spiked surface is priceless.

Was in your same seat and eyeballing the witcher in an unsure fashion. Took a chance on it, so glad I did.

The dialogue in this game must be experienced. The way your choices unfold in the gameworld is excellent. It's not like other RPGs where you have an obvious good and obvious bad response. There are usually three responses and all of them leave you quite unsure as to what the consequences will be.

Consequences of decisions also many times don't show up until hours of playtime later, preventing the ol' "quicksave-cheat my way around a bad decision" method. You get the ending you play, period.

The Witcher is not a perfect game, but it's pretty good IMO. I'd recommend giving it a shot. The quests feel more satisfying than Oblivion's I think and the combat wasn't exactly Oblivion's strong point either I think.

If you love Oblivion you should pick up the expansions of Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine.

Knights of the Nine has a decent main quest and it also includes all the little $2 add-ons that Bethesda tried selling seperately and failed. Most of them are pretty cool.

Shivering Isles is a HUGE expansion with a whole extra world to explore, complete with epic main quest and dozens of side quests all filled with truly deep and fascinating NPC's. The world itself is also a lot more interesting than the main world.
I dont wanna give away too much plot, but when you complete it you get your own personal dimension.

I'm loving the Witcher, myself. I bought it on Steam and despite hearing that it would be censored (in the US) the game I got is fully uncensored. All the flying heads, nudity and cursing are there. I'm only on chapter two, but I find the combat pretty exciting and well executed. All six modes of sword-play have a purpose and switching among them is important. The timing for each mode is different. Yeah, it's not rocket science, but at least it's not click until it's dead combat. Throw in spells and potions and I actually like the combat. One thing I especially like is that you make your own potions, rather than finding them around. I've always hated RPGs where you find potions simply because you never know when you'll find the next one and whether this battle is important enough to use one. Here, you create your own stock based on what you think you're going to need and can always make more if you need to. There are two things I do not like. First the game autosave's before big fights, but often there's a ton of dialogue you need to get through before fighting. In a tough fight you end up having to click through the same dialogue over and over. The other issue is that Geralt (your character) puts his sword away at really bad times. There are a few points where you'll get jumped right as you enter a new room of a load and you'll have your sword sheathed but are under attack by four guys. You can be dead before you have a chance to draw. Minor points. There are lots of quests, lots of things to do, the plot is entertaining, and best of all, your character is a genuine bad-ass.

Ugh, no kidding, I was having a rough time with The Beast until I read an FAQ that gave me an incredibly helpful hint... it was so damned frustrating going through the cutscene when you come out of the cave every time I tried the battle.
Developers REALLY need to take heed of this, I ran into the same thing in Mass Effect.
If there's going to be a long cutscene before a large battle, give me another freaking save after the cutscene! And that gets me to disabling the save ability--STOP IT!

Shivering Isles was the best expansion ever for a RPG. I've played it like a maniac. It's impressive, how the characters behave, the quests and a much more interesting and colorful world, that Oblivion didn't quite had.

If you liked Oblivion you'll be left amazed by this beautiful expansion.

The Witcher: Enhanced Edition is pretty darn good. It is a little different than Oblivion, but probably the closest RPG to Oblivion in feel and immersiveness. I really enjoyed the game quite a bit.

Yes, Shivering Isles was IMO more epic than vanilla Oblivion. The game world just popped with all kinds of amazing eye candy too.

I plan on trying out Oblivion. What kind of patches or mods are necessary for a smooth game experience?

You'll want the official + unofficial patches at the very least. Mods, well, the list is too big.

Just to be contrary, I normally love RPGs but didn't care for either Oblivion or the Witcher as much as most people seemd to. They weren't exactly bad and I finished them both, but I'd never pick them back up again later. I like to plan my characters better than the haphazard training scheme in Oblivion, and I got tired of the combat in the Witcher after a couple of hours.

Mass Effect is worth picking up at the current Steam price and plays somewhat like an FPS/RPG hybrid if you pick a class like the Soldier.

If you loved Oblivion, why not play it's predecessor, Morrowind? It also had two official add-ons (later bundled together in a GOTY edition) and many user created mods.
