Need a new notebook with the following specs...Going with Compaq 2800!

Here's what I need:

- Business class notebook (under 6lbs preferred)
- Minimum 1.6GHz CPU (Mobile P4 or Mobile Athlon4 equivalent)
- 15" TFT screen
- 'Swappable' DVD/CD-RW combo that allows for 1.44mb floppy or extra battery in drive bay
- (2)/(1) Type II/Type III CardBus Slots
- 5400rpm HD (40gb or 60gb)
- Minimum 32MB DirectX 8.1-compliant 3D video chip with Integrated dual display (i.e. "dualhead") support
- Video-out (composite preferred)
- "decent" sound support
- USB 2.0 & FireWire ports
- Built-in 10/100 Ethernet
- Preferrable to have built-in 56k V.92 modem also

Almost Forgot!

- Integrated Fast IrDA port
- option for built-in (not external PC Card) 802.11b/a WiFi adapter OR Bluetooth adapter

Are there any systems out there that meet all these specs? What would you recommend??? I'm very particular about the USB 2.0 support.

7200rpm HD (40gb or 60gb)

unless you want a desktop variant the highest laptop drive is 5400 rpm so you might look at this requirement closer
but not being versed in notebooks this is all i can offer

I think you're dreaming. There is NO laptop that meets all of those specs. The fastest hard disk is 5400RPM (most are 4200RPM). I have never heard of one with Firewire AND USB 2.0. I recommend you get one with a Firewire port and use a USB 2.0 PC Card. I also don't consider any laptops to have "decent" sound.

I think the Dell Inspiron 8200 probably comes closest to meeting your specs but it doesn't have everything (such as USB 2.0).

Egad did I put 7200rpm??? Not quite right in the head today...I meant 5400rpm (currently fastest in notebooks as you both pointed out.)

Looks like my client will have to wait until USB 2.0 becomes integrated into notebooks then. He will need both PC Card slots for Bluetooth support and some sort of authentication device.

Update...I checked out Dell Latitude C6XX and Inspiron 8200...they weren't perfect but they were "okay" fits. Anything else I should know about?

Another bump for the Presario 2800.

I ended up buying mine with a 20GB 4200 rpm drive, but I eBayed that off and replaced it with a Toshiba 40GB MK4019GAX 5400 rpm drive (and saved money too since factory-installed options are WAY overpriced). IBM's 40GNX series of drives are also worth looking at. Both are very awesome.
