My parents have a sony vaio and I'm guessing the motherboard is PTGD-VX since thats the only thing i see written on it in big letters...anyway, my uncle said the motherboard is dead so i'm trying to find a replacement but I have no idea where to look..i've only searched on newegg. i might just get a newer motherboard but i don't know if there's a certain type that i have to buy with the sony computer...now it's using 1GB of ddr memory but i'd like to get a motherboard that has ddr2 .

the motherboard does look a little smaller than usual...but i didn't really expect this to be easy since it's sony...if it ends up being too much work i'd probably just get the ptgd-vx...if only i could find one.

i just chatted with someone on sony's website and they pretty much just said go to a repair center but that's definitely not gonna happen. i figured that would be the respone

And, consider this:

ASUS P5GD1-VM is size mATX, microATX, very common. Lots of boards should fit, depending on Asus's OEM arrangement with Sony--but, it will probably fit your average mATX board. Probably.

I would recommend you get one of these:

That old mobo (can't find too much about it) probably uses regular DDR RAM, the new ones use DDR2; fortunately, it is cheap right now. Really cheap. Check you cereal box in the morning, there may be DDR2 RAM in there as a prize. Get 2 GB or so at least.

The boards above have on board video, so you won't need a vid card....

I would recommend a new hard drive--no telling how old their current one is, and they are not expensive either--50-75$, and install OS on new drive, then plug in old drive and transfer data over....

HTH
