After hearing everything from my friends I am more confused than when I started LOL

I need a new monitor...want to go 21" and CRT mainly a game machine.
But when I am on the desktop I don't want fuzzy text.
I have a 9700 Pro right now and am looking at a 9800 pro or an x800 in the future.

Shadow Mask
Invar Shadow Mask
are these the same thing ?

Aperture Grille

half say sony (I assume trinitron/ aperture grille)
others say shadow mask for better color in games.
ViewSonic
NEC/MITSUBISHI
BenQ

Dot Pitch: 0.25mm (0.21 H-dp)
Dot Pitch: 0.21mm horizontal, 0.25mm diagonal

1600x1200 @ 85Hz

Geez, was anything wrong with it? Trinitron tubes are nice - got one in my Nokia 445Pro. Excellent picture. It's an aperature grille monitor. I find the text to be very sharp on it.

You have GOT to purchase the Phillips 202P45. I bought it after Anandtech recommended it for a top-of-the-line monitor for gaming in their weekly High-end system guide.

It's a whopper of 22", has an aperature grille with no distortion, perfectly flat, and BRILLIANT color, brightness, resolution, and refresh rate. I cannot speak highly enough about this monitor!

The specs: Phillips site's PDF

You can get it for $489.34 at PriceGrabber.com

Cheers,
Brick

I prefer trinitron screens as well.

I got my last one from Merkortech.com.

You can get some sweet deals there on lease pulls.

Try to spot a deal. I was paged by a friend who works at a computer shop about cheap 21"s and I got a brand new CTX PR1400F for $380 (half the price for which it sells around here). Good luck.

Edit: Ok, to add something worthwhile to the post 🙂 - don't go too deep into specs and features. Just make sure you can run 1600x1200@85Hz and you'll be fine. Most likely all new 21" monitors are nice.. and if you get a Trinitron/Diamondtron then definitely it'll be a nice display. I think you can't go wrong with either the already linked Philips or the Viewsonic.

I've just returned an NEC FE991SB, a monitor that featured an aperture grill. I, an many others, including professional reviewers, found that while images and graphics looked brilliant, text was too blurry.

Oh, and be prepared for two to three horizontal lines faintly visible across the screen. They're support wires for the AG. Bugged the fvck out of me, but I'm picky.

I can't speak for any other AG monitors, but I'd try before you buy, if possible. Do your research.

Hey, if you're interested in a 24" one with widescreen you might check this out.

24" Sony Widescreen CRT

Its refurbished, but its a good price considering it goes for about $2000 new (probably not actually but thats what I've seen listed as its price).

Also, free freight shipping to a commercial address.

Whoops I linked to the wrong one.

Sorry for being sooo long on reply but my mother has been in the hospital.

I tried to find one of the new phillips monitors on display somewhere but no luck.
Office depot said they had one in the back but would not bring it out and plug it up.
They did have a ViewSonic G220fb 21" CRT Monitor. It was pincushoined on top and bottom.
The same thing that forced me to take back a viewsonic 19" a few years ago.

Philips 201B45 was listed at $442.95 that is not half bad IF they would put it out and let me
look at it.

Holy crap, 90 pounds!
The 21" thing I got is 70 pounds. You'd need to reinforce your desk for a sucker like that Sony thing. Of course, I should probably reinforce my desk right now too. The weight of my monitor, and the fairly heavy PC next to it (about 35 pounds) has given my desk an incline of maybe 2 degrees. I'm considering designing some kind of extra supports for it.

AG is a bit brighter, but that is their only benefit. Shadow mask has better clarity, straighter lines, better convergence, and no shadow lines. Unfortunately, no one makes quality 21" shadow mask tubes anymore. Thus, if you want 21" you have no choice but to get AG.

Hitachi was the king of shadowmask tubes... I wonder if you can still get a Hitachi Superscan on ebay or somewhere.

LOL.

My NEC 22" is "only" 65.5 lbs, and my desk does give a tiny bit underneath the weight... The stress on the monitor itself has caused a tiny hair crack to form in the top of the bezel.

RE:"You'd need to reinforce your desk for a sucker like that Sony thing.zzzzz"

I built a pedistal out of a 4 x 4 with a round base and jammed it under the desk where the mutha' sits. Works well...Sonys are great..as are the Dells and HP trinitrons.

In about 1997 I got a 17" Trinitron Sony Multiscan 17se. This was back when a Cyrix 6x86MX-PR200 on a blindingly fast 75 MHz mobo was all that, 64MB cost $400, the Matrox Millennium was considered a 3D card, and a near-flat monitor that could handle 1600x1200 was amazing. The Multiscan 17se was 1995's top-of-the-line $1299 monitor, but had come down to a little under $600. It had the 5 BNC inputs so the back of your monitor looked like a Borg.

When 19" screens started coming down to a reasonable price around 1999 (or whenever a TNT2 Ultra was the king), I got two of them. I read all the people saying that a good shadow mask had better clarity and everything looked better, and people thought Hitachi was the best. I got two Hitachi 19's (SuperScan Elite 751). They were good monitors, but honestly the picture looked better on the 1995 Sony.

In January 2002, I got a 15" LCD that I wanted to put in portrait mode next to my other monitors, and even an amazingly awful MAG LCD just lade my CRT's look awful. So I got rid of everything and got two KDS LCD's and a 22" Diamondtron. It looks so much better than those Hitachis ever did.

A good aperture grille screen has enough brightness and contrast that it looks good next to an LCD and has better color. Clarity isn't a problem unless you have a cheap graphic card. There's a reason that most people with Trinitron/Diamondtron CRT's always recommend them and would never go back to a shadow mask.

well said 🙂

I am still running a Hitachi SuperScan CM812 that I've had for many years 😀. It is an amazing monitor. I paid $800 for it about 5 years ago or so. I've used many monitors since buying my CM812 but few that I would actually trade it in for. I know several other people who bought CM812s and are still using them also.

Yeah, everything I've ever had by Matrox has wonderful 2D. I was still using two Millenniums (not Millennium II's) for my side monitors until a few months ago.

I'm not saying it's not amazing. Hitachis were supposed to be the best shadow mask CRT's. I'm saying that when you're used to a Trinitron, it's not terribly impressive.
