I would strongly look at the L.G. models. They have a much better warranty than U.S. companies, and they are built very well.
As far as fron load washers being a waste of money:
1. They use a lot less water and detergent....cheaper for you and better for the environment.
2. They clean better and your clothes last longer.
3. Your clothes come out drier, so you spend less money drying them.
4. They are energy star rated, so you can get rebates when offered from utility companies.
Having used them (first in Europe), they are the way to go.
1: True, much less water and half the detergent
2: Yes and no. Mine doesn't seem to clean quite as well, but still does and adequate job.
3: Mine do come out dryer, but not as much as they lead you to believe.
4:They save a lot of energy. I was skeptical so hooked up the kill-o-watt and my LG uses next to no electricity. Serious savings here.
I just recently switched and I like it, but it does NOT clean as well. The biggest plus I noticed was how QUIET the thing is, much less noise than the top loaders. If you can afford to spend twice as much they are prolly worth it. The sticker on my LG was 899, but I got a free 4 year service agreement and a total of $200 back in gift cards/rebates. Delivery and set up was free too, handy for the basement steps.
