If you can get the Speeze/Fanner units over there you should give 'em a look. Might save you a few Ls.
See my review of the one I use on http://www.techimo.com in the "User Reviews" section. Only $12. at newegg.

The Volcano 7+ is a decent HS, but it is not the quietest for its performance and it is kind of expensive as well. I would recommend the Thermalright SK7 or AX7 with a mid powered fan. It should only be a few dollars more and cool much better. I dont know what you can easily find in the UK, so the Thermalright is probably a decent choice.

That should fit as it says it's for XP 3000+. I just rembered that the Fanner/Speeze coolers are sold under the Spire name in other parts of the world and the name of the unit I mentioned is the WhisperRock II or III.
. So you might be able to find it there.

I have a retail Athlon XP 1800+ and would like to get a new HS/Fan for is because the one that AMD included is just way too damn loud. Being that I am most interested in a quiet fan (while of course providing the required cooling), is there a particular make/model that I should get? I couldn't tell from below what the consensus was for the quietest recommendation.

Thanks!

moonshine et al.,
. I use A.S. products. The A.S.3 requires careful application per the instructions on their site, but it's worth the effort.

Stuman et al.,
.Almost any unit with an 80mm fan is going to be quieter than those with a smaller fan because it doesn't have to spin as fast. Both the Spire/Fanner and GlobalWin units have 80mm fans thus should be equally low noise. I just found out that the GW has a variable speed fan that ranges from 25-40 db - the F/S is fixed speed at 26db. There are adapters to fit 80mm fans to most other sizes of heat sink mounts. Go to http://www.SVC.com and browse the options - not too many places have much larger selection. I found the GlobalWin at 1coolpc for $33. plus shipping. The Fanner is much lower cost. To me it's a no-brainer. If you might like a cool modded Fanner WhisperRock for $18. shipped, PM me.

No one said get a Vantec Aeroflow. What temps were you getting before your cooler crapped out?
