I was just reading through and thought to ask this question:
Does the Intel D850MV require some newer type of case for mounting the CPU and such? Seems I read about some 4-hole config in the case that some of the older PIII cases do not have. (like the one I have :() I have seen some good prices on the Intel D850MV and the case thing has kept me from upgrading. Am I on base on that thought?

<< 1. I want to make this is absolutely sure, the chipset type. At the official site it says it is Intel 845 chipset, but At that Tomshardware's review, it says it is 845D. I want this motherboard 845D not 845. Any1 could confirm? I am going to call Gygagtbyte this morning.

2. Does Gygabyte make a motherboard with similar specs as GA-8IRXP's that has 4 memory banks not only 3?

1. Since that board supports DDR memory, the chipset has to be an i854D. The original i845 only supported PC133 SDRAM.

2. I doubt it very much. There are very very few DDR boards with 4 DIMM slots and some of those have been problematic when all 4 slots are populated (it's a timing issue). To get around that problem, those manufacturers specified buffered (registered) DIMMs - when populating all 4 slots with double-sided modules - instead of the much more common unbuffered types.

Again, thank you, senior guy.

I just called Gygabyter support persnnel . The following is the summary of the conversation.
1": Gygabyte officially recognizes 8IRXP as *Intel 845 chipset*. The person I spoke with assumes that Tomshareware, to differenciate, labels the 8IRXP as 845D, because it supports DDR.
2''. The one Gygabyte makes with 4 memory banks is modeled, 8ITXE. It has no on-board RAID, USB2, LAN. In other wors, it is entirely different from 8IRXP. Thus I will buy 8IRXP.

Thank you,

Correct. You will need a case that has the additional 4 mounting holes to hold down the P4's HSF. This is because the P4 has a dual speed fan that 'kicks into overdrive' if the thermal sensor indicates the temperature inside the chassis is too high. If and when this happen, it creates vibration, so Intel specified those mounting holes to preclude any resulting problems. Furthermore, be aware that all P4-i850 motherboards have a requirement for an upgraded ATX power supply known as ATX-12V (it provides a 12V lead in addtion to those typical found on most PSUs). Hope that helps!

BTW, exactly what are those 'good prices' you found on the D850MV and where?

I'm sorry, senior guy, I should have said, "I have passed on a couple of Intel D850MV mobos because of the case thing." At one time or another, I saw the D850MV for sale on At or over at Ars. And I remember that it was a price I would probably have paid. There are some days I'd like to kick my P3v4x/PIII933/512MB machine out at get a Intel chipset P4 setup. 'Motherboard/CPU out - motherboard/CPU in' is a upgrade, but when you have to consider a new case and new ram (I have a P4-ready psu) that's a higher activation energy to overcome. :)

That's a fine system, so get off the upgrade frenzy and enjoy what you have. ;)
