Got a Sapphire 5850 toxic, and I just picked up a i7 930 from MicroCenter. I need recommendation for a motherboard. I use this rig mostly for gaming on 24" (1920x1200). I'm planning to oc the 930 hopefully to high 3ghz, and plans to get either 4 or 6 gb of RAM. What motherboard do you recommend? Ideally no more than $200, but $300 is my maximum.

Asus p6x58d-e...I just finished a build with one of these boards and it was a pleasure to work with...with these giga boards its a crap shoot as to weather it will whine or not..out of the 5 giga boards ive used in the last 6 months three have whined but didnt affect performance...giga really needs to get this issue handled as there are alot of complaints about it all over the net..its a board issue...giga builds as fine a board as anyother top tier company but these x58 boards have had this issue for too long now..asus boards dont have the whine, msi dont, asrock dont,no other company building x58 boards experience this bug as often as giga...
Dont get me wrong as i build alot of computers and like giga boards but ive has 3 people return them too me within a week of delivery for this whine from the tower..replaced motherboard 1 with asus,2 with msi and all is good..i cant keep taking a loss on these boards with rma + shipping back to my supplier...anyway giga its time to own own up and fix the problem at the manufacturing level .....

I was using an Asus Rampage II Extreme and was extremely pleased with it while it worked. Recently died but the RMA process for it has been smooth at least.

I only suggested the Giga as THG had just finished a review of some X58s & made the recommendation which I forwarded. Personally I have always bought Asus & have always been pleased. On the other hand, I often followed THG recommendations but for peripherals & also have not been disappointed.

It was speculated on my part that P6X58D-E would be outside the subjects price range, but that the Giga would be within price parameters. If money is no object, then I would also recommend & go with Asus.

I had the same problem with my EX58 UD5 which is why I returned it. The squealing was really annoying.

Two observations:

First, the whining on Giga boards isn't exclusive to X58 boards. I've got one rig with an i5 750 on a P55A-UD3 and it whines like a school kid who just got his lunch money taken away by bullies if you push the cpu's OC too much. As it's the wife's computer, I just keep the OC down lower than what I'd personally run it and the whine is kept in check, for the most part. Doesn't bother her, at least.

Second, seems Gigabyte is putting some of their capacitors that surround the cpu socket a bit closer to the socket area than most other manufacturers....a little out of Intel's socket clear area spec. This has caused problems for water cooling cpu blocks not sitting flat on the cpu without the underside edges of the cpu block being slightly beveled. Koolance's 360 had fitment problems as did Swiftech's XT, both solved with a rev. that beveled the underside edges of the blocks. This fitment problem was exclusive to Gigabyte boards and did not happen with Asus, EVGA, MSI, ASrock boards, among others.

Probably not a problem for the air cooling set, but water coolers looking to use Gigabyte X58 boards have another reason to look elsewhere, like Asus, EVGA, MSI, etc.

I went with a Asus P6X58D, too. Looks like you got another vote. I got mine from new egg. You might check it out.
