need a mic

What is a good microphone to use? I just want a mic by itself, not one that's part of a headset. It needs to receive well at least 12 inches away.

from 12" away, almost any normal mic will be picking up room echo/noise that can make the sound garbled. That's why most use a headset mic (w/ noise canceling) for chatting or IP telephony. Radio Shack has what was once called a Z-mic (Crown Electronics patent) that reduces room echo dramatically - they now call it a conference mic. It costs over $40. Otherwise you can try any unidirectional mic and hope for the best.
