Hey guys(or girls)...I am looking for some suggestions for a MB for an XP2800+"Barton"333. I am probably going with mwave.com as they have some great bundle deals...just can't decide which motherboard.

I have looked at the ASUS line (A7N8X-X, AN8X-E DELUXE) but not sure if there is something better out there...

Any opinions would be welcome...and NForce or VIA...no preference there.

Also...I would not be interested in overclocking and would be using my existing 512mb PC2100 DDR RAM.

Thanks.

I paired my 2800 with a ECS NF2 board that I got as a combo at Frys and its stable. Probably a $50 board. The combo was on $89. It has no problems with a generic Legacy PC2100 512Mb dimm that its in.

Shuttle AN35N
I have 2 of these and can say they are a really good bang for the buck!

Both of them installed probably as easy as any mobo's I have ever setup.
They also overclock with the best of them.

The only reason to spend more would be if you wanted built-in "SoundStorm" audio.

I also have a couple of Abit's. They are pretty much the top rated board for AXP's, but I wouldn't put out the extra cash again. The Shuttle is every bit as good.

Steer clear of ECS....cheap components make for unreliable performance.
BTW- I bought my first Shuttle after a second ECS rma w/NewEgg.

I have an older A7N8X and was able to overclock my 2500+ barton chip to 2.2GHz, 3200+ speed. Reports as a 3200+ too!
Just up the default memory speed from 166MHz to 200MHz, and use DDR400 Ram. I have Corsair XMS 2x512MB.
Haven't had any trouble with it.

I would recommend the ASRock K7V88 since you're not overclocking. It has more features and is a little cheaper than the Shuttle AN35N.

The onboard sound is very nice too.

Looks like I am going to go with the ASRock K7V88 (6 onboard USB 2.0 ports and 4 DDR slots...that's insane) from Newegg and the XP2800+ Barton from Mwave...I will let you know how the install goes when I get them.

Thanks for all the recommendations.

I have 2 ASUS units running on Barton 2800+'s. Not OC'd; But very stable and dependable . The first is an A7N8X -DX with 1Gb of PC2700 OCZ matched Dual memory and XP-Pro. The other is the A7N8X-E-DX with 1Gb of PC3200 OCZ matched Dual memory and XP-Home. Really no complaints with either board. I do suggest a hefty power supply if you go with these units; I use Enermax EG465P-VE's in both units.

Just reporting back on my motherboard purchase...Installed the K7V88 without a hitch. Popped on the XP2800+, a little artic silver II, my cpu fan, made one jumper change (for FSB)...installed it in the case and had a fresh install of Windows XP running within an hour. It runs nice...next test is for some serious gaming.

Thanks again for the recommendations!
