Any suggestions for a cheap AM3+ MB? This system will just be used for folding. No need for OC features.

Thanks

That board only has 2 PCI-Express slots and for a mining rig you want 5-6.

The ASSRock 970 Extreme 4 has 5 slots although its by no means the cheapest.

ASSRock has built Intel motherboards specifically for mining.

Most people just use a single core Sempron for mining you don't need an 8-core 8310.

Folding@Home not Bit Coin mining.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Does that Gigabyte board support the 8310 out of the box ? I'd be careful on that, as I have had that issue crop up on me with Gigabyte boards before. Otherwise, I like that board for a cheap scratch build as well.

Thanks WT. I will double check that.

Let us know how it goes. I just read the thread in the CPU forum on that 8310, and I was really interested in one to replace my X4 965 BE. Looks like a very nice chip, but unfortunately the only game I play these days (Company of Heroes 2) is such a horribly coded mess that those extra cores won't help a damn bit in-game.

The 8310 is not on the supported CPU list so I am going to have to keep looking.

Since it's a 95W chip, you could probably put it in any old board and keep the VRMs relatively happy (until you try too much overclocking). But yeah making sure it's on the supported list is a good idea.

This slickdeal post mentions the Asus m5a78l-m-usb3 board in a bundle, so apparently that board can handle the chip (maybe?). You might not like the board features though, such as no SATA3 support.

I'm in the same boat with my MSI 790X-G45 board. I added a Vertex 4 SSD - no onboard SATA-III !! I bought a dual drive eSATA/USB 3.0 enclosure - no eSATA or USB 3.0 !!

I have quickly outgrown the board, but to change it out for an AMD board that offers SATA-III, eSATA and USB 3.0 is gonna run me $100. Or I could buy a separate PCIe 4x SATA card like the Hyperduo and a combo card with eSATA and USB 3.0 - which would combined cost me $100 !!

I decided it just wasn't worth the expense to improve my benchmarks and just bought a cheapo USB 3.0 PCIe 1x card to use with the enclosure. It's faster than eSATA and doesn't incur a 25+ second boot delay that I'd get with the Hyperduo card. Sometimes the best upgrade is no upgrade at all.

The FX-8310 was intended as an upgrade for older AM3+ boards, so it's likely if an FX-8100 or better is on the supported list, the 8310 will work.

The Gigabyte website is a bit of a challenge on the CPU support list, but it looks like the Rev 4.1 or newer rev 5 of that board will work as of BIOS version F3. That is for the Vishera 8320 chip and not specifically for your 8310.

Even so, like crash pointed out, if it supports the chip FAMILY, it should support the OEM chip, as they tend to NOT test the OEM chips for board compatibility. I'd say that board, provided it is a rev 4.1 or 5 with the FE BIOS on it is as good as it will get.

A 4+1 phase power design means overclocking will be very limited, but you pointed out already that this is not a concern.
