I'm still trying to figure out why it needed to start?

You're a cop. You go to the home of a prisoner out on parole who missed his last few appointments with his parole officer. He is the father of a family who is at home too. He opens the door. He has his hands in his pockets. You tell him to turn around and put his hands behind his back. He turns around but doesn't take his hands out of his pockets but instead yells to you that he doesn't have any weapons. You ask twelve more times and still he refuses. Do you A. Just let him go cause you don't want to escalate the situation uneccessarily or B. Set his home on fire?

Onlookers and tweaks would probably be yelling "Police brutality!" and "WTF, man? He was just chilling and you, like, came out of nowhere, man." But that cop, by burning the home, killing the remainder of the family in the process and making sure the paroled prisoner wasn't a threat (whether or not he had a weapon) would have done the right thing for for his twisted view of justice - but for society he would be a dangerous criminal, loose his job and be sued for murder.

fixed your analogy for you

Why the war needs to stop? Because Innocents die in wars. It's elementary.

The war will stop as soon as the Iraqis tow the line. If the terrorists would go away, the United States would go away. The United States has no interest in staying. It's bad politics and certainly not economically rewarding. The sooner they wake up and smell the coffee, the better. All they have to do is to play nice-nice, and the evil Coalition will go away like a bad dream.

As far as why it started? Please!! Iraq had violated (on numerous occaisons) a peace treaty with the United States of America. This allows the United States to resume blasting until they see fit to stop blasting. It's the way war has been fought since time began. There is no international treaty, law, or precedent to say that the invasion was not justified. When you break a peace treaty, you risk war.
OK, how long do you think it will take before our actions start paying dividends instead of costing us Billions, Hundreds of live and unstability in that region? It's a big gamble the Dub and the Neocons took and some believe a rather foolish and costly gamble.

Can the measure of peace be quantified? Sure, WAR can be quantified(to a point), but can peace?

Onlookers and tweaks would probably be yelling "Police brutality!" and "WTF, man? He was just chilling and you, like, came out of nowhere, man." But that cop, by beating the guy down and making sure he wasn't a threat (whether or not he had a weapon) would have done the right thing for society.

This lame analogy sums up quite well the national, self-serving insanity that allows some to believe that the US is the worlds "cop." Then, when people (or entire nations) get completely PISSED at us we whine like babies that we haven't done anything to deserve that hatred.
