I am putting together a 1.2 Thunderbird sytem. It is going to be on a Abit Kt7a Raid m/b.

I may try to do a little overclocking eventually. Would like to try for 1.3 or maybe 1.4.

My questions are concerning the best heatsink/fan for this type of setup.I would like something relatively quiet-but effective. In other words, I want it all. BTW, the case is going to be an Antec sx830. Also, any advice on where to buy would be appreciated. I am also looking to buy a couple of more case fans. I am thinking of getting Antec fans. Who sells them?

I am leaning towards the Taisol CGK742092. Would this be sufficient? If not, what do you guys suggest.

I said urgent in the title because I am doing the ordering right now.
Thanks for the help.

I haev a KT7A-RAID motehrboard with TBird 850@1000. I use a FOP38 for cooling, its VERY loud though. It cools everything like you wouldn't believe though ....

The one thing that I would say to remember when overclocking is that things have a limit and to ust be sensible about what you do, but above all take it SLOWLY.

Good Luck!!!

I don't mean to sound like a heretic or anything. And I have been overclocking ever since I got a 486DX-33 to run at 66MHz. But still, once you're at 1.2GHz what does one really gain by overclocking to 1.3GHz?

i think once you hit 1GHz...there is no difference. everyone rants and raves about like 4 more fps in Q3A...WHOOP DE FREAKING DO! 4 more fps isnt gonna make you awesome! neither will another 200MHz..its called skill in games, simply skill

now this had nothing to do with your thread, i had to just get that out.

id say if you can stand the noise get an alpha pal6035 w/ delta. i love the little sucker.

sunon case fans are great to have around, and a big YS Tech 120mm fan for intake...135 CFM is always nice =)

You won't get an argument from me Dan. Practically speaking, there is probably little reason to O/C a 1.2Ghz chip. There is probably little reason for me to even have a 1.2. For the most part, it's just another toy for the old man to play with.

I think my post might have been worded wrong. I should've emphasized that I am really just interested in getting the best HSF for the 1.2 Thunderbird without getting something that is going to make me deaf. If I o/c the thing, it will just be for the experience. Not because I need the speed.

I guess because I don't play games very much I tend to forget the value derived from realizing an extra fps or two.

But, all in all chasm22, I agree with you completely. I was just striving for a little perspective but let's face it: when I get a 1.2GHz chip I'll be doing my best to overclock it too! (It gets in your blood.) :D

chasm22:

I just ordered the same CPU and board. After doing the research, I am going for Alpha PAL6035 with Black Label Delta HSF. I think that ths best HSF out there. O'course it's just in my opinion. Do some of your owe research on-line. Most web sites out there do have HSF comparison.

the reviews of the kt133a mobos show all of them to be tight spots around the cpu... with the exception of MSI... make sure theres enough room for the taisol, its a big baby... yet effective and not as loud than others

I have a T-Bird 1GHz and have had very good luck with the GlobalWin FOP 32-1. It is rated very close to the FOP 38 and is not nearly as loud. The Alpha is a better overall HSF, but most tests only rank it at about 2C cooler than the GW's...at nearly twice the price.

Whatever you do, I would recommend staying far away from the pretty little ORB coolers.

btw...the FOP 32 series will fit very nicely on your board with no bending the capacitors away to make room. I use it on a KT7 (non-RAID).
