My friend is coming to the states for a few months and asked me about getting prepaid / pay-as-you-go service for his unlocked AT&T iPhone 4 (or 4s). I haven't had to deal with these services in the US, and from what I can find it seemed more straight forward when I lived overseas, so can anyone tell me if any carriers offer the following for an AT&T iphone (price is not a concern):

talk
text
data/web
international calling
no-contract

Do prepaid plans require a US credit card?

Are the pay-as-you-go plans the ones that use the scratch-off / top-up cards you can buy at drug stores and bodegas? Do these plans support data? It didn't appear data was an option on the t-mobile site.

Net10 is probably your best bet. Unlimited calling/texting & 1.5gb data for $50 month, and you can buy the SIM & plan at many stores.

It looks like Net10 and Staight Talk are sister companies, and they both require messing around with the APN to get text's and possibly voice/data working.

Are there any carriers that wouldn't require this? I don't want to be stuck supporting this when he arrives, nor when he gets back home and it's not working there with his home SIM.

Straight Talk isn't even available on AT&T any more.

I'd look into the Death Star's own native GoPhone plans, which IIRC are reasonably competitive now for low data users.

Most if not all prepaid carriers will require APN modification to get data working, so this is something that he's just going to have to deal with.

What kind of usage is he expecting? 'Unlimited everything' sounds simple and he doesn't have to think about anything, but there are many AT&T-based carriers that offer slightly different plans, which may be more suited to his needs and also costs less.

Here are some of the AT&T-based MVNOs that you might want to take a look at:

http://airvoicewireless.com
http://goredpocket.com

For all of them, you could get their SIM card on eBay (around $1 each), and then activate it online on their website.

Edit: As the post directly above, I also would like to encourage you to look at AT&T's own GoPhone. One of the new plans might suit his needs.
