I know there is a topic at the top for jobs but being this is more then just a couple to dozen openings I thought I would post a general thread. If the mods don;t like they can delate. Thanks

I work for the State Department. We will be hiring 400 PASSPORT SPECIALIST in the next several months to year. Pay starts at 30k range and goes up to about 49k. Can get by without a bachelor's degree, but having one will REALLY help, esp if your GPA is 3.0 or higher in ANYFIELD. Just need to show you can use MS office well, have a good work history, and a clean criminal record.

If you have any questions for applying for a Gov job just ask. Also when you apply select GS-5 AND GS-7. Do not only select 1. If you choose 7 you might not meet the requirments and if you choose 5 you might be able to get 7 but lose out. But don;t worry. As long as you show up and do a decent job you will get a promotion the first couple years.

How to check on your application.

OPM provides a number (215)861-3074 and an e-mail address for applicants to contact regarding their applications. Unfortunately when they call, it's a recorded message. The best way to get a response is to send an e-mail to philadelphia@opm.gov Below is the blurb on the announcement in regard to what to expect after applying.

"WHAT TO EXPECT NEXT:

Once the application process is completed in its entirety, a review of your application will be made to ensure you meet the job requirements. A review will be made of your responses to the occupational questionnaire and the documentation you submitted in your resume to support your responses. Applicants that are found among the most highly qualified may be referred to the hiring official for consideration. If, after reviewing your resume and/or supporting documentation, a determination is made that you have inflated your qualifications and/or experience you may lose consideration for this position. You will receive notice via email or by mail, if no email address was provided by you during the application process, once this process is completed (generally 4-6 weeks). If your name is referred to the hiring official, you may be contacted directly by that office for a possible interview.

I've never had the perseverance to figure out exactly how to apply for a Fed job. They sell books at Barnes and Nobles telling you how to do it so it is definitely more than just filling out an application. I tried once right after college and they sent me this huge packet full of paperwork that I filled out and returned. A couple of months later I received something back from them in the mail that appeared to be a copy of a copy of a copy checklist form asking me to provide information about a college course I did not take which evidently was required by them. At that point I figured my destiny lay elsewhere.

possible to do this while being a student? Tutition assistance?

No it is a full time job, sorry. Check with the Chicago passport agency to see if they have any intern positions. check the USA job site for them.

Goverment jobs are done mostly with computers/online so there is very little paper work now. But there are several questions they will ask. One sheet has 100 questions. Very easy but takes time.
Also look at the jobs requirments. If you don;t meet them then don;t waste your time. There is little to no leway in them, i know. 😉 So if a job says you must have A+ to get a tech job then you MUST have A+. Does not matter what else you know or have done. Now sometimes it will say must have A+ and/or exp. in xyz area for 1 year. Thats different.

Too bad you guys aren't looking for any comp sci guys cause I'm on the look for a new job, and looking at government type or government contracting type jobs.

Nice. Looks like some decent opportunities to get in the door. Maybe if the Consulting job I'm planning on accepting today doesn't pan out... Thanks for the post.

I am pretty sure this is due to the huge amount of applications for naturalization you'll be getting int the next few weeks until July 30th (since the naturalization application fee will go up from $330 to $595 +$80 for fingerprints)

Yea this is a good foot in then door job. Getting a goverment job is not easy, unless you are ex-military esp. Vietnam Vet.
But once in they will train you and after 3 years or so you should be able to get up to GS-11 or so and be able to move to another job with the goverment. Also after 3 years you get 6 hours of time off for every 2 weeks of work instead of the 4hrs you start with the first 3 years.

My sister in law, who works for the Gov., will probable make more money, work less time, and have more vacation days then her husband a eng. that works in DC next year.

Oh man, I wouldn't want to work for the passport dept right now.... Huge backups and a lot of pissed off travelers. (hence the reason they're hiring, heh)

"Must be able to maintain a high risk public trust clearance"

Does this include a credit history or credit score (which can be manipulated) check? Sure hope so . . consumer debt reflects a lot about character, judgement, responsibility, and potential for being exploited by criminal elements.

Is union affiliation expected?

Yes criminal, credit, etc... is done. Union is automatic and does help the workers if something comes up. They can't strike, at least legally. I am not in the union because of my job title and work I do. So the union can't strike but di help if a problem comes up. So it is more netural then some other unions. But you can always leave the union, it is not required.

Yes we are hiring because of the backup. So this is a good way to get your foot in the door. I had to wait almost 6 months from my "hire" to when I started because of my TopSecret status. We are looking to get people in quickly so this job will help.

Interesting...one in my state, even, albeit wayyy down south.

# Must be available for Overtime
# Must be able to work Alternative Work Schedule (all shifts available)
So am I looking at 11-11 overnights..? 😛

No not really. Yea there is a big need and they just want to be honest. There might be some at first, overtime that is. But other then that you do get paid for your time. Its not like you get paid for 40hours and have to work a lot more. This is a goverment job.

Wow, this is great stuff. Thanks for the heads up!

I just graduated from college and this pops up... definitely tempting. Since I live next to LA, I think I might have an outside chance of getting a position as well. (GPA 3.3, so that's a plus)

Willing to work my butt off and put in the hours, just need to get my foot through the door. Sucks that I have to wait until August before I get my official final transcripts so that I can turn it in.

Always wondered how to get hired by the government, since a lot of people said government jobs have tons of connections, but getting in the door the very first time is near impossible. Here's keeping my fingers crossed.

Well I am listed as a HR Specialist. So I can/might see into others files and systems. One of the reasons I am not in the federal union is because MGT comes to people like me with what to do about XYZ person when they did so and so at work etc... So people in my group are seen at the firends of MGT while unions are seen as friends of the reg. non-mgt workers. I have books that tell me what you are allowed to doand what not. How to advise a manger of their powers and what they can;t do and so on.

AlgaeEater

Yea getting started in a goverment job is the hard part. Heck from the time I did my interview it was OVER a year beofre I really started and there was a whole list of twist to how and why I ended up here. Even then my TS clearance is still in interm.
But yea you have a great chance to get the job and because you have over a 3.0 GPA you have a good chance at GS7. But even GS5 is ok as you will more then likely hit GS7 after just 1 year. The first year or 2 will be basic training and work. But after that you have the chance and ability to apply and get other goverment jobs.
