So, this is my new setup

Abit IP35-Pro ($110 Shipped)
4X1GB Hp Ram ($12 AR)
Q6600 (Waiting to pickup a cheap second hand one for the 45nm early adopters)
600W PSU (From previous rig)
160gb sata hdd (from previous rig)
7900gt(from previous rig)

I want to get the quad to at least 3.2 ghz, will this be possible with the stock HSF? what after market cooler would you suggest?

also, last time i built a rig (early socket 939 days) AS5 was the best paste around, whats top of the line now?

Temperature may be a problem on the stock heat sink at that speed. I see you're trying to pick up a 2nd hand Q6600 too, try to get a G0 stepping since you intend to overclock on air. Every little bit helps.

As far as which hsf to use, most any of the tower design heat sinks are great and perform within a few degrees of each other. I'm currently using the Tuniq Tower which I like.

AS5 is ok paste, but MX-2 is better imo and slightly cheaper.

TX-2 and the Tuniq Tower 120 aren't a bad combo either. (and right now TX-2 is cheaper than AS5 at newegg)

I've tried AS5, TX-1, TX-2 and AS Ceramique on five Q6600 G0's with Tuniq120 and they all perform identical for me...same temps (1-2C of each other) and same overclock (3.3GHz on 1.35-1.40 Vcore).

For the record though TX-2 was the best for my situation (lowest temps means quieter systems when the mobo controls fan speed on the Tuniq) so I ultimately chose to use it.

Lapping made a bigger impact on temps than did thermal paste. Case airflow too no doubt, although I did not vary that parameter in my tests.

Shin-Etsu G751 thermal compound is the best IMHO...
Most big tower heatsinks are good.

Thermalright
Tuniq Tower
CM Hyper 212
Zerotherm Nirvana120
ETC...

Anything with a tower and a 120mm fan should be good to go.

Built several rigs with Thermalrights Ultra120 Extremes and Arctic Silver 5, and no issues whatsoever.

also, if you happened to have a quad o/c'd please tell me what speed its as, what grease you used and what HSF your using, thanks :)

I don't have my Q6600 OC'd yet (it's refusing to OC even with an FSB increase), but with an Antec 900, AS5, and a Tuniq Tower (with the fan blowing towards the 200mm case fan) my temps are 28-28-22-22 idle and 45-44-34-37 under full load. Keep in mind though that this is in a machine room with an air conditioner that keeps the room at 69-70F (~21C).

I would recommend the enzotech ultra-x hsf. I have two systems using them and they work great, good temps and the mounting hardware is consistantly good plus it comes with a tube of as5.

QFT. IMHO this HSF has ousted the ACF7P as the best bang for the buck so long as your budget can support it. YMMV of course.
