I've decided on getting the Thermalright SLK947U as I guess the Zalman CNPS7000A-Cu may not work with the Athlon XP 2600+ mobile and NF7-S Motherboard, but I need a fan with the heatsink. What is a good fan for heatsinks? I don't really know anything about this, so all info is helpful.

Do you want quiet and kinda weak, loud but strong as hell, or a good in-between? If you want a good in-between, would you rather a little more power or a little more silence?

In between, probably a little more power than silence. I like a quiet computer, but if it's going to overheat (I'm overclocking like a mother) I'd rather it not.

Look around retail sites until you see one you like and look for reviews on it. If the one you choose doesn't review well, pick another and go through the process again. Stay with the big names and be prepared to spend more money for better performance.

I've got an Arctic Cooling Copper Silent 2M. It's really nice because it's got 3 selectable levels of performance, and its whisper quiet. Combine it with some AS5, and you'll be very happy. It has a copper core. CHEAP!

Alright, I'll go with that fan, though I hope i don't place it in the right way and destroy my processor. Those reviews sort of scare me, as I have no idea what I'm doing. I don't know how anything really goes together, and though I'll have a few friends helping me I could really use good documentation. Oh well, I'm sure I can figure it out.

For what you're looking for, you might also want to consider a ThermalTake Smart Fan 2. It gives you the option of using a temperature diode or manual settings for the speed. And even if you have it at full blast, it's not too extremely loud. I really like mine and I consider it slightly on the louder side of in-between.

I understand, but if you're going to develop the expertise needed to build and maintain a homebrew, you're going to need to learn the tricks. Not many people are going to take the same interest in how your machine runs as you will.

I have a Swiftech MCX-462 rev. a, it's served me well for 2-years now. It has a problem though. Dust collects in it like CRAZY and I have to WASH and floss it like teeth to get it clean. The newer versions set the pins in a flower peddle design that looks to be easier to clean and less noisy.

This is one of two I'm looking at as a replacement. It reviews VERY well.

This is the other though I haven't seen it retail yet.

As you can see, I don't look for "cheap", I key on "good." Don't let a review scare you man, it's all about learning. Plus the chicks love a brainy bad-boy. :D Good luck!

Maybe you got one from a different catch than I did, but smarties generate a LOT of noise at full speed (4700rpm?). I had two mounted as intakes (after trying them as exhausts), and together they were too loud for me, and I usually don't mind a bit of racket.

Mine very well could be deffective or insanely quiet but it's not bad at all. I have it hooked up to a rheostat but I keep it at full blast because slowing it down doesn't really make much of a difference. It's perfect for what I wanted (a little more powerful than quiet but still in the in-between category).

EDIT: Oh, and since you'll likely ask, I do have the jumper on it that keeps it at full-speed.
