Need a HDTV for Gaming (Xbox 360)

Hi guys,

I just bought a Xbox 360 and Halo 3. I have an Ancient 32" CRT TV. It only have Composite and S-Video. I also have a Samsung 226BW 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor (1680x1050).

I'd like to get a Widescreen HDTV for Gaming as a first priority(As Little Lag as Possible). And I'd like it to be At Least 30"-32".

I'd like to purchase at Best Buy, since I have a credit card there.

I saw a Widescreen CRT HDTV there. It was a Samsung Slimline 30". I know this will have no lag, but I'd like to get a bigger one if possible and that was the biggest CRT HDTV there. So that leaves LCD or Plasma.

Any suggestions?

P.S. I did see a Sharp Aquos HDTV there that is supposedly made for gaming. It was $1350. Widescreen 1080P. Any info on those?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Thanks. That's a little bigger than I was thinking. And 8ms response time. I was hoping for less. Should I just stick with that 30" HD Widescreen CRT? Or are there any LCD's that have unnoticeable lag? I'm willing to go a bit over $1000 if I must.

response time doesn't make a difference anymore. Any tv (as long as its not a crap unit from the dollar store) will be fine.

i run a 32" vizio from sams for $600 and it works excellent - 720p, and i also have a 40" 720p westy, again, works excellent. i would recommend either one

and don't get sucked into the "made for gaming" bullshit, sharp has been known to make excellent tvs, so i don't know why this one would need that type of advertising. most "made for gaming" is just a marketing gimmick anyway.

Really? I've been doing some research today, and most gamers say otherwise. This will be my first HD TV. So I personally wouldn't know. That's why I'm asking, and doing research.

I appreciate your help.

I thought I was reading that the Sharp gp1u with the Gaming mode, actually helped with Lag.

I wish there was a HDTV review site that focused on lag for Gaming 🙁 That would help make this decision easier.

Thanks for the comments guys. I appreciate the help.

i wouldn't worry about it. i have a 720p 42" Toshiba Plasma at home (not at school, unfortunantly. 🙁 ) that we bought a year and a half ago, and GRAW2 and Gears were flawless on it. anything you will pick up today will be fine, i'm sure.

I have a 42" Sharp 1080p LCD that works great for gaming. I wouldn't be too worried about lag on any modern TVs. There were some problems with a few Samsung DLPs but that was a couple of years ago.

Forgive me, but where did you poll "most gamers"? I'm not doubting you, but I'm keeping in mind that most gaming forums (Gamespot, IGN, Gamefaqs, etc.) today are filled with squabbling teenagers who wouldn't know LCD from LCoS. AVSForum is the best source for this type of information, but there are plenty on AT that know their stuff as well.

Don't fall for any salesman bull about a TV being "made for gaming". There are no problems gaming on today's LCDs, Plasmas, or DLPs. The only issue within the last 3-4 years with any of them has been a delay on DLP, which has been solved for quite a while now. My 2006 model 56" Samsung DLP came with a "Game Mode" that I can set to the HDMI or Component input that any game. In the last few years, Samsung has licensed this tech to any DLP maker worth their salt.

EDIT: And if budget is your primary concern, I would go with one of these cheap 37-42" Westinghouse/Vizio LCDs for $600-700 that pop up in the Hot Deals forum from time to time. IF YOU CAN WAIT 2 MONTHS, there are almost always excellent HDTV deals on Black Friday. But I'm a Black Friday junky, you may not be interested in waiting that long.

response time no longer matters (on a TV anyway). I have a 42" Sony Vega 42" LCD Projection and every 360 game looks flawless.

I was checking out the MLGPro.com forums. Major League Gaming. The biggest and best-known League for Console Gaming. People there are very competitive. Lots of people there were saying that LCD's have a noticeable amount of Lag. The game I'm playing is fairly fast. With practically every ms counting (Halo 3).

I may be over-thinking this, but I like to play this game competitively. Well, I did for Halo 2, and I plan on it for Halo 3 (Just came out).

Since I've never owned an HD TV, I don't know if this lag will bother me at all. But I'd like to keep it minimal, to a point where I know it won't matter much.

With that said,....What would you guys recommend in the $1000+ range for a HD TV with Gaming a High Priority for Fast Paced FPS on Xbox 360? Any links to review sites for more info? Is the Sharp 32gpu1 more money than it's worth? I don't mind spending a couple hundred more for something like the 32gpu1, even if it will only make a small difference. Every bit counts 🙂

Sinnerx96 - those lag issues you may be talking about were when the real old lcd were out, like 6+ yrs ago. but honestly, in the past 3+yrs lag hasn't been an issue.

unfortunately i suffer from frequent migraines and on top of that am extremely sensitive to flickering of any kind from any light source and i would notice a lag, flickering or ghosting when a lot of people won't due to this medical condition which is both neurological but also effects vision too.

i have gamed many fast paced games on both pc and 360 and between the 2 lcds i have, the 32" vizio from sams and the 40" westy, both 720p, there is not, that i can see, ghosting or lag that is from the lcd itself.

a lot of the lcds do have a "gamer mode" but that is more for color levels.

not trying to sound like a dick, but imho some people suffer from the "placebo" effect based off of other peoples input and/or marketing hype.

the issue w/ the response times is that i don't believe there is even a standard on how it is measured, so unless that is changed, that number really doesn't mean anything as there are different ways to get the response time, again, unless there is a standard now that i am not aware of. hell, even 3yrs ago i was playing cs on a pc on a 15" sony lcd that had a supposed response time of 15ms and guess what - no lag.

i personally wouldn't suggest something on this forum unless i would buy it myself and i have a few friends that have seen my lcds for the 360 and have then gone out and picked up the same models possibly just in different sizes (and some of these people game a lot) and have been happy with it.

fwiw, i would buy one at a store that has a decent, customer friendly return policy in case you don't like it - or hell even buy a couple and then you can compare. i know i have gone into best buy before when looking for certain items and i will tell the salespeople up front - i am going to buy 4-6 different brands of this item and return the ones i don't like and they have been cool w/ it in the past.

I found this site which has some actual data on HDTV lag: http://hdtvlag.googlepages.com/home There was at least one person in the big GP1U thread on AVSForum that did similar tests with the GP1U

I have a GP1U, but don't play many games that are really affected by the lag (guitar hero is a big one). I got it because I wanted a 1080P 32" monitor, and that was the only one around at the time.

I think the lag most people see is imagined. They "see" a better response from a "better" TV because they expect to see it. Any decent brand HDTV should give you good quality and response time. Don't read too far into things like that.

Of course, if you feel the need to spend a bunch of money to have a competitive edge, then go ahead (PS. Im mocking the idea of playing a video game competitively)

I'm not going to be able to back up my claim with anything scientific, but if you check out the PC Gaming forum and ask there are a lot of ATers that use Westinghouse LCDs as PC Game monitors. If they can be used as monitors for PC FPS games, which I believe are easily more twitch-sensitive than anything played with a game pad, then they would be fine for your use.

I'll also say that I wouldn't go by any numbers claimed by a manufacturer unless verified in a review. The whole contrast level charade that monitor producers are allowed to perpetuate is less than ideal for consumers.

At this point I'd suggest going to AVSForum. Good luck.

As much as I'd love to have a technical reason why I can't get by The Beast and the Harlot on Expert, my Guitar Hero ability is unaffected by my DLP's supposedly laggy technology.

Personally, if money is no object - you need to look at the new Sharp Aquos LCDs, not Sony's ... Sharps have always looked a lot better in my eyes.

As to the guy who said he was getting headaches - have you looked into the new 120hz refresh reate panels?

i am the guy w/ the headaches and have run crts w/ extremely high refresh rates and still the same. for me the migraines are more of a neurological issue but i am still extremely sensitive to flickering light, but these lcds don't give me headaches, i either wake up w/ one or not. if i have one when i wake up i will be in bed all day, no going on anything that day, just dark room, ice and sleep.

but i do appreciate the suggestion.

i guess i am just saying that even w/ a more than normal sensitivity to flickering, these lcds don't give me grief

How do you feel about capital letters? 😛

Kidding, of course, here's hoping for all good days.

I picked up a 37" Vizio from Costco for $799 this summer and love it. Gears of War looks great on it, and my regular DVD's with an upconverting player rock.

The Vizio might be down $50 or so by now.

Edit: 720p.
