I am in need of a second hard drive to complement my Maxtor 27 GB 7200 RPM now. I need it for dual booting (boot seperate hard drives) and plus I need more space. I have a dedicated Promise Ultra66 controller (unmodded). RAID 0 isn't an option really, I want something a big bigger than another 27 GB drive.

I'm aware that IBM GXP75s and the brand-new GXP60s are the fastest, but they are expensive. How are the other offerings lately?

How 'bout another Maxtor? A 40GB 7200rpm going for just $120 now.

Maxtor. I haven't had any probs with the 2 20 gig Maxtor drives I currently own. Once one of them fried during a series of power surges, and all I had to do was call up Maxtor, and 2 days later I had a replacement drive. all I had to do was ship back the old one in the same box, postage paid by them. They have excellent warranties on their drives, and their drives are great.

the 40 gig LXi suggested would be a good idea.

I plan on picking up the 80 gig maxtor from newegg.com. I think they were going for around 220 or so. I just want it for my juarez. J/K. I just need more space for things. I might pick up two 80 gigs and raid them, but they are 5400 rpm's, so I'm not quite sure yet. I really think the IBM 75GXP's are awesome, but they die fast, or so I've heard. You should check out storagereview.com for some good reviews on HDD's that you might want to pick up.

I like my IBM 75GXP's best but have had no problems with WD, Maxtor, or Quantum. Have no real experience with Seagate.

RMA'ing the IBM's can be a hassle though. Mine lasted 2 months, then sectors went bad to the point where I could not recover. You can get the RMA number online easily, the packing is a bit overdone I think. I went to the local mailboxes etc. and they wanted to pack it in bubble wrap and peanuts. IBM says if you send it in bubble wrap and peanuts it voids the warranty. I told the guy at mailboxes etc. that the peanuts and bubble wrap would void my warranty. He assured me it would be okay, and went into a long story about how long he's been packaging harddrives and that is safe and that I should basically "try it." Then he told me to tell IBM that he's been packaging harddrives for 10+ years or whatever... So I just said no, and left and called IBM and they said that if I had "tried" the bubble wrap and peanuts I would have voided the warranty. So good thing I didn't! I still didn't have any of the materials necessary to send the drive out. I searched around but no place around here had the right material. So I called back IBM and they said they'd ship out the proper shipping materials. About 4 days later a box with my RMA number on the outside (like it should be) arrives. Inside is a foam "tub" to put the drive in, and a electrostatic bag which is required as well, and then you seal that, and pack it in the foam, and put the enclosed seal on the outside of the box, and place the correct address info stuff on the top. Then ship it out.

Get three more 27GB drives and RAID em all. That will be faster than running any other single drives on the FT66.
The mod to the controller is easy, and RAID is worth it, especially when you move a lot of large files.

Maxtor's site doesn't even list your HD, but I know they made 5400RPM 27GB drives, because I have seen them at Best Buy.
27.3GB 5400RPM EIDE ATA/66 27GB Ultra Mode 5 for up to 66 MB/sec 5,400 RPM $ 117

07N3935 Model: DTLA-307075 Deskstar 75GXP 75.0GB EIDE Ultra ATA/100 7200RPM 2MB Cache $ 254

The RAID version is $100 more, but 6GB larger and faster.

It's all about price. All the drives are good these days and the speed difference is cute, on paper, but any ata66 or ata100 7200 rpm is fine.

Looks like Maxtor is loved :) NewEgg.com has some good prices so I think I'll pick one up there. If I buy an OEM drive, such as one from NewEgg, they still list a 3 yr warranty - is that through Maxtor or NewEgg? I thought companies didn't accept OEM drives...?

BTW, trust me that mine is 27 GB, 7200 RPM, DiamondMax Plus.
