Need a good replacement router

I've got an older D-Link 524, revision A, so it's a few years old and has seen a lot of use. Last few weeks it's been slowing down a lot, just clogging up almost, and then it'd randomly restart. Not a heat problem, it's got lots of airflow, and it has the newest firmware, so no problems there.

I've been looking at the Buffalo WHR-G54S to replace it, heard some good stuff about it, anybody that can provide any feedback on it? Suggestions on other routers to look at? I need something I can configure easily, lots of options, something kind of heavy duty that'll handle lots of traffic and connections. I'm running on my Vonage V2442 backup right now, it's absolutely horrible :(

Based on your "lots of traffic connections" and easy to configure criteria, the D-Link DGL-4300 "GamerLounge" router sounds like a good fit. Another option would be the Buffalo WHR-G54S or a Linksys WRT-54GL + a DD-WRT firmware upgrade, though I'm not sure how well either will handle torrents or other P2P traffic - others would have to speak to that.

Newegg's got the WRT54GL for $52.99 with free shipping after a $10 rebate, I'd go with that versus the Buffalo if I were flashing with DD-WRT since the price is so close and most of the aftermarket firmwares are geared to that hardware specifically.

Explain to me this DD-WRT firmware upgrade. I was looking at the Buffalo because it had been mentioned that you can flash it with this firmware, but it seemed like it removed the router capabilities and turned it into an AP only? Exactly what's the point of the DD-WRT firmware?

Wow....just wow. Got the new G54S installed, amazing how much faster it is than my failing D-Link. Also, way better than my Vonage 2442 router. For whatever reason, on both of the previous routers, there were a lot of junk packets showing up, and on the 2442 the log table would fill up after a few hours, and the thing would slow to a crawl.

This thing just cruises right along, no issues at all so far, no lag like on the previous two. One thing I didn't like was that there's no port forwarding setup, or anything like that in the internal pages, at least not that I can find so far. But it seems to just work on its own without me having to set it up, pretty slick stuff.

A+ to Buffalo so far, great product.
