Title says it all. Prefer it to be fast and free. Tried a couple, and they either sucked or didn't work.

Using Vista x64 Ultimate if that makes a difference.

Haven't found a PC program worth a crap yet. Good luck.

VisualHub works great and is fantastic on the Mac.

My good ole standby has been AVI2DVD: http://www.trustfm.net/divx/SoftwareAvi2Dvd.php (free)

A new one that's just popped up is a noname..seems to do decently, but a little buggy..http://sourceforge.net/projects/alltoavi/

The art itself of MKV to AVI is EXTREMELY complicated, especially when the full allowances of MKV are brought to bare, such as multiple audio and sub tracks. IF the automatic tools don't work, which 15% of the time they don't, you can go the all standard method doing it one step at a time (read as VERY time consuming but gets it done): http://forum.videohelp.com/topic241422.html

Just remember all these methods are VERY picky about the system you use. Make sure before you even start you support all the codecs you need in the file. MKV is a container shell, it actually houses videos and audio in their native formats. You could have a video as x.264, .avi, .mpg, or .mov or any other video format, along with audio in the .mp3, .wav, .aac, and many others. Having the codecs installed on your system is key. I normally install the full xVid codec, with LAME MP3, AAC, OGM/OGG, Quicktime/Realtime alternatives for my codecs. You can get just about anything you need from www.free-codecs.com They also have many of those tools, including AVI2DVD and VDubMod.

Good luck.

Alright thanks for that!

Well, I also have some videos that are AVI. They play in WMP now that I downloaded a codec, but played in VLC anyways. HOWEVER, when I try to convert them or something, they show up only as audio files. What do I do?

That's good enough i think. Do you have the xvid codec installed? Can you send me a copy of the file you're trying to work with.

you don't have a good enough connection to sent it to megaupload? Then all you gotta do is PM me the link here on the forums, i can download it, and get an idea of what needs done and why it's only coming out as audio on your system.

From what I can see you have everything installed correctly. I had this issue recently with a camera file. All I've been able to do is first convert it with AVI2DVD, then take it to whatever else I need. I do have another program I've used, but I can't get to experimenting with it till later today if you can wait about 15 hours or so. I don't know what causes this, but it just brings it in as audio, doesn't make any sense.

There's a tool for PS3 files called MKV2VOB which apparently works pretty well -- for the PS3. As for other devices...

VLC and Foobar2000 can convert media as well, and both normally work fine.
