I'm looking for a user friendly lite distro of linux to hand out on some computer I'm donating for Christmas.

What do you recommend?

He is looking for a light weight distro. That would exclude anything that uses either Gnome or KDE.

Another light distro that might be worth checking out is Elive. It is based on Debian so software will be easy to install.

"Light" is a rather nebulous word. One might even say that "light" is in the eye of the beholder (insert big smile here).

Some would think of Damn Small Linux (DSL) or Puppy Linux as being light. Others would hold that Xubuntu or Elive fit the definition. Depending on various things that you have not specified (cpu speed, amount of memory, hard drive space available, etc), I would tend to recommend Debian testing with XFCE, download the cd here:

I recently installed this on an old Compaq box with a Celeron 600, 192 megs of memory, and an 8 gig hard drive. The end user was quite happy, as she had become very frustated with Windows 98 on the same box.

Ubuntu plus Fluxbox is very light, though I've yet to figure it out. Xubuntu is not quite as light but much easier to use, providing you perform the requisite "speed tweaks", and have at least a PIII/500 and 384mb of RAM (anything below this is painful.)

PCLinuxOS is my fave too, but since he's looking for something light, i recommend Puppy Linux.....and there are lots of distros derived from it. even one with KDE. ( ! )
