Need a good internal Blu-ray burner

I bought a LG WH14NS40, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA9T03T01384

Installed it and went to burn my massive 50GBs of Flight Simulator to a Sony BDE-XL 100GB disk. At about 8 GB in the drive started giving me problems saying it could not copy the file to the disk, something or other IO problem.

So I thought maybe it was the firmware. Went to LG's website and tried to download the latest firmware and Pale Moon (my browser) wouldn't download it. Tried Firefox, same thing. Tried IE and I was able to finally download the damn firmware. Went to upload the firmware and it said there is a checksum error. I see this is a common problem according to the reviews on NewEgg.

So I sent an E-mail message to the seller on NewEgg, R2B2 Buys this morning for a RMA and have yet to receive a response. This thing set me back 50 bucks!

So with all that text out of the way. Does anyone have experience with a good Blu-ray burner that can burn a BDE-XL disk and has Mdisk support? Mdisk isn't that big of an issue, but it would be nice since I was going to burn some Mdisks.

I'm a little reluctant to buy from LG again as you can imagine.

TIA!

Edit-

I should mention I tried to upload the firmware in Safe Mode. Fail.

After using Safe Mode, when I booted my computer normally the HDD light was on constantly and I was having issues deleting files on the desktop. The file I deleted to the trash can wouldn't disappear until I right clicked and refreshed the screen. These problems went away after I removed the Blu-ray burner.

Hmm. I have the same burner, and it has worked tip-top for me. Then again, I haven't tried to burn any quad-layer BD-XL discs with it, LOL. For SL DVD/CD/BR, it's been just dandy.

What sort of controller are you running it on?

Some 3rd party SATA controllers do not like ATAPI devices.

So true.. I suspect controller over the LG. I have 2 LG's and neither has given me any problems. I did have to do a firmware update to the 12X long ago, but it remains flawless after thousands of burns. The other is same model you have, and it's nearing a thousand burns, also without issue. I guess you could have gotten a defect, but LG is very responsible about honoring their warranty.

Wow, almost $11 for that 100GB blank media.

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Bluray-Triple-Blueray-Printable/dp/B00G5RVT5W

which is similar to your LG WH14NS40 (OEM)

Yeah, I actually bought the disk on Amazon at around $20. Just one disk.

Doesn't say that it works with BDE-XL. Those are the 100 GB disks.

I'll have to see where in the MOBO the SATA cable is connected to now that you guys mention it. I'll definitely try the other controller.

Okay, I see now. I had to go to pioneer's website and see that it supports BD-RE TL. This is very disconcerting because Newegg should, no NEEDS to have the full specs as I won't buy something if the product doesn't have what I'm looking for.

I'm using a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 motherboard and have tried both controller ports and the disk that I was able to burn 8GB of 50 GB isn't reading right at all. I'm wondering if the disk got messed up on my first attempt at burning the 50 GBs. Because I changed the SATA port to the new controller and it was taking forever to read the disk that just has 8GB written. I was trying to just delete the folder, but I can't.

I should mention the drive reads CDs fine.

Sounds like a bad disc then. You might try reformatting it.

BTW, if you don't have anything important on it, or have another disc, try doing a mastered burn. Packet writing can do strange things from time to time in my experience.

Edit; Regarding mastered burning. If you're using windows built-in burning, make sure you have sufficient free space on your c:\ drive. In this case it would need to be 100GB. Windows caches files to it before burning.

Okay, how do I do a mastered burn?

All I did was copy/paste the 50 GB folder into the explorer window for the Blu-ray drive and away it started burning. Kinda wondering if that is a methoud I should use or a software solution? Is packet writing what you mean by drag and drop in explorer?

I tried to delete the folder, but it constantly accesses the disk and I can never do anything. I see the folder on the disk. Also, the writting pattern on the disk its self looks weird. Doesn't look as consistent as a DVD like I'm used to seeing on a disk. I thought perhaps the disk went bad, was written to bad or something. I spent around $20 for the damn disk on Amazon and a lot of people said it worked with this burner.

The disk is a Sony. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00G5RVTNY?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

That might be a problem. I'm actually burning a little over 50 GB and my SSD being C:\ is short on space since it's only a 128GB. I do have plenty of space on the platter. I wonder if I should change an environmental variable? Would that work to force the cache to the second HDD?

Absolute easiest way is to use dedicated burning software like cdburnerxp or nero.

Yes. But when you popped in the empty disc windows should have asked which way you'd like to use it, since it can do both.

I tried to delete the folder, but it constantly accesses the disk and I can never do anything. I see the folder on the disk. Also, the writting pattern on the disk its self looks weird. Still sounds like a disc problem. More specifically a file system problem.

I know how you feel though. Back in the 90's/early 00's one prayed that windows didn't decide to do some random thing and cause a bufferunderrun, and trash an expensive disc... :'(

Again, the easiest way to burn is dedicated burning software. Packet writing has too many things that can go wrong IMHO.

Remember those days well.. Hence the name BURPO.. I felt like I was the Buffer Under Run POlice.. :\

Your LG burner should have come with a disc that has LG Burning Tool & Cyberlink Blu-Ray Disc Suite

John, is this thread in relation to the other one about VHS --> DVD? Seriously, burning something to BDXL will only benefit if you can be assured that every BD player can handle BDXL media. And if the one PC is the only place then rip dem VHSa to a hard drive.

No it isn't. I wouldn't use a BDXL disk for the VHS tapes anyway...just a plain Blu-ray disk.

What I'm doing with this BDXL disk is backing up my 50 GB folder of FS2004.

It did. I chose the USB drive option as I have done before.

What happens is that the disc gets formatted with UDF, and you can use it just like a USB drive or external HDD. I think Windows still caches files before burning though.

The only disc type I'd recommend using like that are DVD-RAM discs. But that's a pretty obscure format. Then and now.

Well, I tried the other SATA controller and that was even worse. In fact my working DVD/RW never even wanted to work on that controller. I have tried native SATA and non-native SATA with both controllers.

I installed CDBurnnerXP and it won't even launch with the blu-ray drive installed. Only with my DVD/RW drive.

Now I'm thinking about buying a SATA PCI-e card and see if that will work. I just wonder about the fact that this computer is so old that the blu-ray drive just doesn't like the SATA controller.

If the machine in question isn't an Intel Z77 or better (or it's AMD equivalent), just spend the money on an upgraded system: motherboard, CPU & memory. Depending on your budget: even a used box off of Craig's List.

I plan on building a new machine some time soon. I bought the case and CPU cooler already. Getting an i5 6600.

Well, I bought a PCI-e SATA controller card and tried that and still this blu-ray drive acts like a POS. Reads music CDs, but can't write and I think it messed up my BD-RE XL disk because the drive has trouble even reading from it.

I used CDburnerXP and it did erase the disk. But the burner remains a POS.

Your link is from 2013.

I tried the software and it was taking forever to copy over 50GBs of data. I let the computer run for about 16 hours and it was still on the bitmaps in my FS2004 folder. Mind you that wasn't burning anything. That was just adding what folders, etc I wanted to burn.
