Springfield XD-9 Sub Compact is a great carry gun..small enough to conceal easily, but powerful enough to do some damage.

I'd also suggest the Glock 19 for 9mm.

Since he does have a bigger frame, look for a compact version of the 1911 also.

glocks are supposed to be extremely reliable but i would never own one because they look like crap.

Would you rather have a crappy looking gun that fires every time, or a nice looking gun that jams on you in a life or death situation? Since it's concealed carry, nobody will ever know he's carrying anway.

you should be shooting the gun often if you use it for concealed carry and you should know if the gun jams that much you know about it and get it fixed before you get into that type of situation.
also, are they 100% reliable? any gun can fail to fire for any reason.

I need a good and reliable handgun to carry with me. I am not a gun buff so I really do not know what I want. Any suggestions?

Good and reliable? A S&W revolver will not let you down. Not sexy, only 6 rounds, boring.
Jam? Doubtful🙂

before the glock springfield war starts..because it always does! I will say the springfield is an amazing gun... I had a 9mm and soon to have the new .45 acp version... absolutely flawless and I prefer it over glock...

there is nothing wrong with a revolver... S&W Featherlite Model 642 is an amazing gun...probably be a great backup gun.

1911 is a very bad choice for concealed carry..it weighs a whole lot, and it is very hard to hide the grip...the only thing it has going for it is that it is a very thin gun... Don't get me wrong, they are great..but just dont think it is the optimal concealed gun.

I agree; for the average person it is a poor choice to have for concealed carry. But if you can find a compact 1911 and you have a larger frame, you can get away with it.

Are you looking for concealed carry? Then get a subcompact Springfield Armory XD in .40 caliber. Go for the 4" service or 5" tactical model in .40 otherwise. You really should find a range that offers rentals to test before you purchase. Also take some classes on proper handgun safety and laws if the constable job, for some strange reason, doesn't offer them.

I picked up a Springfield XD40 a few weeks back and I really like it,it's the four inch service model. For concealment,I carry my little Kahr PM9 which is a very nice gun...It's small, light and very reliable.

I really do like shooting my XD40 though, very accurate gun.

Don't rule out Glocks, they make a very nice pistol...Very reliable.

I may pick up a Glock 23 in the near future.

GET PROPER TRAINING. I mean find an expensive/reputable trainer and pay him.
Try some different models and calibers. The absolute minimum you want for personal protection is a .380.

If I were to ever carry a handgun (probably never will, I'm not the kind of person that would be able to make it an asset if I ever needed it), it'd be a big revolver. Much more style to them then the semiautos.

I'd say go for a S&W mod 910. 15 rounds(9mm), light, easy to clean, and comfortable. i had an opportunity to fire one on an RCMP firing range here in BC. great little gun 🙂

S&W says $632 for it, MSRP

i say carry a really big sword. one of those Conan / Final Fantasy VII type swords. And a small glock as a back up but the sword would freaking cool.
