There's plenty of addictive 2D games... BeSpelled... Cubis... MahJong... BeJeweled... I use to play those a lot.

I thought this was a parody because it said dame last night so I didn't post in it. I would recommend Rise Of Nations if you liked Civilization 3. Why not Half-Life 2 though? It's not as fast-paced as all FPS and may not give you a headache, and 18 hours would be perfect.

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory.

I just finished it. Absolutely brilliant game, but it's a little short. Maybe 7 hours.

MVP Baseball 2005 ($30)
NBA Live 2005 ($20)

These two games could keep me occupied for hours... 18 hour flight, definately.

Sports games or you can always go with the classic Starcraft + Brood War combination - I think it's impossible to beat both in 18 hours (without h4x)

Hate to break it to you but many airlines don't use standard power connectors, thus you need an adapter to plug your laptop in. Also, the majority of seats don't have power connectors to begin with, with the exception of Business class seats.

that one seems interesting. I'm also looking at Rome: Total War. Anyone played this?

The million dollar question is....

what kind of laptop do you have? MOST do not have 3d accelerators - or have crappy integrated 3d accelerators (really, talking like 90%+ here, unless you specifically buy a gaming laptop).

No modern game will run any good on those at all, but you can still do older 2d-style games. RPGs like:
- Icewind Dale
- Icewind Dale II
- Baldur's Gate

etc

(I see you mentioned a '700m' in another post. Can I presume this means a DELL Inspiron 700m? If so, that's using an Intel Integrated 'Extreme' graphics card - forget any game made within the past 5 years on that piece of crap.)

EDIT: Checking Gamespot's review list in descending order of rating, games I see you SHOULD be able to play:
- Freespace 2 (you'll need a joystick - Saitek's ST90 travels well)
- Warcraft III (MAYBE)
- Warcraft 2 (definitely)
- Neverwinter Nights (barely, will need to turn graphics down)
- Mig Alley (joystick again)
- The Sims (not Sims 2)
- SimCity 3000 (MAYBE SimCity 4)
- Deus Ex (NOT Deus Ex 2 - this is a great game, btw)
- Thief: The Dark Projet (NOT Thief 3)
- Independence War (NOT Independence War 2 - will need joystick again)
- Starcraft
- Jane's Longbow 2 (will need joystick again)
- Planescape: Torment

And adventure games will almost all work just fine. Plus, they are LONG - you won't finish any of them in an 18-hour flight:
- The Longest Journey
- Grim Fandango
- Syberia (get the first one before the second)
- Syberia 2 (the sequel)
- Curse of Monkey Island
- etc

Of those, I'd probably recommend 'Longest Journey' and/or 'Syberia' above the others. They are both modern adventure games, and look very good - plus, the games kick ass!
