I'm in the market for a good computer desk now that i'm moving out of the dorms.
I would prefer one thats on the "deep" side so i can stretch my legs out below it and have the monitors sit further back.

You can see an example here:

I dont really like keyboard trays since theres no room to rest my arms when I'm typing.

Get an L shaped desk if you have the room. The extra desk area is fantastic.

I agree with this. As soon as I have the space I plan on getting one since you can have a work space and a space for your laptop/computer.

I second that idea! I got it when I moved out the dorms and still using it years later. Its very durable, large (3' deep, 4' wide) and can accomadate many computers

Moo.

Ikea Jerker ftw, (I have the long one without the top stuff), and i added a keyboard tray from my old desk.

The Galante line from IKEA is similar to the jerker but one of the models basicly makes it L shaped.

I'm in the market for a desk also. I'm trying to find one that is just a flat surface and 4 legs (or more if its a corner desk.) I've had 2 crap desks from wal-mart with shelves and keyboard trays and I hate them.

Try a height adjustable table: Office Depot

The medical field has cool ones: two tiered tables that allow the height of the tiers to be adjusted independently. Ferociously expensive.

The monitors are set way too high on most desks I see. A dual tiered table would be really useful. You could adjust the monitor height appropriately and still have a decent workspace height.

I would look into a custom built desk if you have the scratch. I had a bid for two custom desk with monitor platforms and PC case boxes to get them off the ground. Guy was gonna charge $1100 and the material was maple. Then the cat got sick, so no custom desks. Anyhoo...

corner desks are my favorite - you get much more room

I built my desk, wish I had had more foresight when I did and made the hutch detachable. It is 2' deep 4' wide. It had a keyboard tray, but one of the pull out glides had a tendency to loosen itself from its mounts and would become shaky and lopsided... besides, i have a laptop now and no need for a keyboard.

That's exactly what I have. I finally ended up going to a furniture store and found what I was looking for.

How is the quality of Staples furniture? Those L-shaped desks look pretty neat, such as this one:

I have that desk. While I liked it initially, and the price was right, it quickly started to sag. The drawers now don't line up right and the hard edges of the top can hurt your arms. I'd really suggest buying a desk with a beveled table top.

corrected ;)

I have had the best luck building my own. Most desks are too shallow and/or have not enough space for storage. I usually build mine with major book storage to both sides for easily grabbing something I need while working or playing.

I put my printers and scanners up and over the work area so my prime desk space is not taken up.

I built my last one for about $150 for an apartment I am now moving out of. about 3' deep and 6' wide with storage for plenty of books. It looks smaller than it is (that is a 19" CRT in the pic and my 21" Sony G500 fits just fine. Sides are 6' and 7' tall (left vs right).

It's not as wide as I wanted or as deep, but I was dealing with a limited space. My wife and I can work side by side just fine.

For the house I have bought I will use much nicer construction and better wood.
