need a good chess book

after Chess for Dummies, which has good basic tactics and stuff, get this book:
Logical Chess: Move by Move by Irving Chernev

It's the best book I read when I was first starting out, and has a lot of really good stuff in it. The best part is that it goes over famous games by grandmasters and analyzes EVERY move, so you aren't stuck wondering about some moves like I was early on, and sometimes still am.

I went to the used book store a few years ago and picked up a couple of books. They were dirt cheap and all ended up being pretty good. I'd suggest starting there to save a few dollars. The actual game of chess hasn't really evolved too much in the last 10-20 years, so most books probably cover the basics you are looking for (opening, mid-game, closing moves, etc.).

pretty interested too

i love chess
i wish i played it more often instead of diablo2 😀

but reading about it makes you so much better, along with frequent practice too obviously.

about 2 years ago me and my buddy used to play chess almost every day, we just loved it you know? and he would beat me 7 games out of 10 on average. i wasn't getting raped every time and some games were close, but he was just a hands-down better player. i started playing more online and reading about it online too and when i came home from school last xmas, after not having played him for over a year, i beat him 5 times in a row and frustrated the hell out of him.

Dolph,

Depending on your beginner level, the following books can be recommended:
- for the very beginners:
Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess
Chess Basics by Nigel Short

- for more advanced players:
Attacking Chess by Josh Waitzkin
Chess Openings: Traps and Zaps by Pandolfini

There is a list of recommended books on http://www.chess-class.com/rec_books.html for the players of different levels.

Here are a few books that I have:

"Winning Chess: Brilliancies" - illustrates some grandmaster games. You can probably just read this at the book store if you have a few spare hours.

"Reassess Your Chess" - haven't gone through much of it yet. It's suppose to be good, but there's so much notation that it can be hard to read more than a few pages at a time.

"My System" - haven't finished this one either. Quite a bit of notation as well.

Sometimes there's just too much studying in these chess books for me.

In my opion the best beginners book is Bobby Fisher teaches chess. I am not sure where you can find it but it is a excellent primer. The next best is Chess Openings by I.A. Horowitz for second tear player and up.

I am sorry, dfi, but My System by Aaron Nimtzovich is not for beginners. It is very useful for players with rating of 1400-1600 and much higher...
(Beginners are usually players without rating or with rating below 500-600)

my rating is 1200 and i have MySystem. about 1/4 of the book was good. the rest was over my head.

1) learn the basics. ie: how does a pawn, bishop, knight, queen moves
2) PRACTICE and practice. go play online. who cares what your rating is. after a year create a new acct.
3) For openings, start with the basic 1) E4 as white. For black i have NO IDEA 🙁 i still have not found a good opening for black that i like to counteract 1) E4. maybe the caro kahn. I REALLY hate playing the silician.

4) After you have picked an opening for both white and black, get a puzzle book. that'll teach u how to think 2-4 moves ahead.

after that, go back to MySystem 🙂

what's wrong with sicilian?

mainly because i don't like to Fianchetto. it just seems too complicated.

I guess i want to learn an easy Black opening 1st.

and at my level, defending vs a Fianchetto is easy-> 150 attack.
