Need a good camping jacket!

Looking for something lightweight but good for rain, wind, etc. The most important thing is the wrist pockets and the no hood. I'd also like it to look good enough (as in not bright orange or with all sorts of stupid "outdoorsman" stripes and crap) to wear about.

Something like THIS but preferably less expensive.

Ideas?

As an avid hiker and climber It is important to know what one plans to do with that jacket. Do you want something water resistant or water proof? How much wind do you want it to block? How cold is it where you are camping? With these questions asked I can help. There are several places I go to buy hiking and climbing gear. If you just want a generic water resistant, mild wind resistant coat, try a North Face Apex. I use mine a lot for the majority of my hikes. I even bought 2 of them cause I wanted another one.

Yeah, fairly generic... good at everything, not necessarily great ($$$) though. More for short camps and hikes in MD, and something that'll serve well as an all around (aka, i don't want to take more than one) jacket when i (hopefully) take a trip around england in feb/march. Comfort is a priority, since i'd be wearing it a lot of the time.

I like the Apex, but no wrist pockets. 🙁

what do you mean by wrist pockets? if you put a decent fleece underneath the apex is suitable for pretty much most conditions.

The coat you linked has:

Zippered hand warmer pockets and napoleon pocket on right chest
Zippered bicep accessory pocket on left sleeve

few coats have a biceps accessory pocket if that's what you mean by wrist pocket.

Buy a textile motorcycle jacket and remove the armor. Or, leave the armor in just case you come upon a battle in the woods.

try patagonia:

that is a nice jacket but it comes with a hood.

another brand i like is cloudveil:

Softshells are lousy backpacking gear. Heavy and they won't do the job if it actually starts raining for longer than 30 mins or so. Great for climbing though.

However, it doesn't sound like you're going to be doing that, so a softshell should be good for you. How lightweight do you want it to be? A ~16oz softshell jacket will typically be the lightest softshell with a fleece liner, but in terms of insulation, would be less warm to being as warm as a 100weight fleece (thin fleece). A ~24oz softshell jacket will typically be equivalent to about a 200 weight fleece in warmth. For reference, a North Face Denali is 300 weight.

FYI, I find that TNF runs large.

You gotta get a hood dude. If you want no hood, don't wear a jacket....get a good fleece. If you're looking for outerwear, you'll want the hood and you'll want something rainproof.

Look at REI-branded jackets as well as what they have on closeout. Columbia makes good stuff (I've been wearing one of those for a while that I picked up for $25@rei....totally waterproof and breathes well)

TNF is a good brand, but you can get a much better jacket for less. Marmot, REI, Mountain Hardware, and Columbia are all good brands and have different models from entry level up.

I don't like or have hoods on my softshells; if I want to keep light precipitation off my head, I wear a softshell beanie. IMO, hoods just get in the way and change how a jacket sits (for the worse).

Otherwise, it's time to break out the rain jacket.
