Taking a trip and buying a GPS for the trip (cheaper than renting)
Starting with Tomtom, there are many models in the $70-$100 range.

Not sure which to choose.
I might as well get the latest, greatest, modern model in this price point.
I want USA and Europe, so I can use the GPS at home after the trip.

Here are 5, but can I do better bang for the buck?
Which has most recent features, newest, most memory, live traffic, etc?

If you have data, your smartphone will work in Europe just fine with its Global Positioning System. If you've already invested in an offline GPS app, you don't even need data.

You shouldn't link ebay here.

Here is what I would consider...

1. Get a Nokia phone. You can pick up a Nokia 520 for like $50 nowadays. It should come with Here Maps. Use that.

2. Get a Garmin GPS. I got one for $77 shipped, the NL50 or something. Buy the Europe map.

3. get an unlocked Android or iPhone and use it.

Phone is not an option.
Just want an affordable stand-alone GPS preloaded with EU.
Any specific recommendations?

No, necessarily, what countries are you going to visit?

Pay for 1 month of TMobile's plan on your vacation, it's month to month, you'll get updated maps, and have "unlimited" data, click on their link, it covers most of Europe, you'll need a phone anyway, why not combine the two?

It is good, but latency will probably be 1,000 ms and speeds are limited to 128kbps.

Best to just buy a SIM in the country he is in or install offline maps.
