Need a Domain hosting company, any suggestions?

In short, the title says it all.

I am thinking of starting my own business and want to have a website. From what I understand I'll need to buy the .com/.net/.org names and will also require space to host the website.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to good companies that do this?

A friend mentioned godaddy.com, the knee jerk reaction was to hold off and research to see if there is anything better.

A lot of websites have linux and windows options, can someone explain the difference? Why would someone pick one over the other? Especially if they both do the same thing?

Preferably hosting.

btw whats the difference between the linux setup vs the windows?

One will have Linux as the OS and one will have Windows. Many people will automatically prefer Linux because they believe that it will be more stable or because they would rather have Apache than IIS as the server software.

I have had good luck with Lunar Pages. Go for the cpanel option for future flexibility. For your intents and purposes, thier basic packages run you 5-25 bucks a month, and all of those are unlimited bandwidth, unlimited storage. The only differences are the amount of email addresses, the number of SQL databases, and SSL options. But in my experience so far, when you are spending less than $30 a month, they are all the same, simplified watered down control panels, but they will host your pages just fine.
