Need a dedicated server

I want to pay as little as possible, but I don't want a crappy server, so I need to balance cost with quality. Space? I don't need a ton of space, I have a small shopping cart website and a few non-related websites I would put on it. I would like to create about 30 or 40 text websites for advertising, and there is a possibility of a website for hosting pictures (kind of like a "Rate my whatever" website). Bandwidth? I'm not even sure how many hits a month my site gets.

hoyaguru,

Before we can make a recommendation on a dedicated server we MUST KNOW:

1) Your budget, we need a definite number.
2) Hard drive space requirements.
3) You want Linux not Windows, right?

1) About $100 per month
2) 40GB to 100GB I guess, what is normal?
3) As far as I know, linux is fine.

Here's what I would recommend:

Semi-managed - ServerMatrix.com (this is what minendo, a few other AT'ers and I will be ordering around 12/1 - interested in sharing a small portion of it?)

Unmanaged - ev1servers.net ... if you are or know someone who is an experienced sysadmin then ev1 offers excellent bang for your buck.

I will definitely need Semi-managed. Looking at ServerMatrix.com, I think the SuperServer is what I am looking for. What does it mean by "5 usable IP's", does that mean I can only have 5 websites on it? Why are you waiting until 12/1, do they have another special coming up? Thanks for the info.

Our SM sales rep returns from vacation on 12/1 and I really can't divulge any more than that 😉

Ignore the 5 IP's, you can host unlimited domains based on 1 IP ... you don't really need more than 1 unless you're running web hosting, secure server cert (eCommerce), etc.

Consider adding cPanel for $20/mo unless you have your own control panel or prefer to go commando.

Well, I'll definitely need cpanel. If I start with a lesser server (the SuperCeleron) is it possible to upgrade later to a SuperServer if I need it?

hoyaguru it sounds to me like you're a good VPS candidate. It's effectively a dedicated server with shared resources. Check the link I gave you. You can get one for about $35/mo with cpanel from dedicatednow.com.

And, would it be wort it to wait and talk to your sales rep? I'll tell him you referred me. 😉

I'll see if he can give you a special deal also. The Celeron for $99/mo is perfect, might be able to save you a few $. Remember cPanel is an additional $20/mo on top of that, so $119/mo.

Rossman, can you PM me about this?

ServerMatrix has new special offers which are even better than before.

http://www.servermatrix.com

If you don't mind the $99 setup fee, you can get the P4 2.4/512/40 for $99 plus $20 cPanel = $119/mo.

What makes this even better is 2nd FREE 40GB Hard Drive without the typical extra $$$/mo fee.

I just found the ServerMatrix.com Celeron 2.4 including cPanel for $99/mo with $0 setup.

I'll PM the details to you.

GO FOR IT!
