need a decent 5.1 receiver

There is no 7.1 to decode. DTS ES or Dolby Digital EX have 6 discrete channels, but no format that I'm aware of has 7.
7.1 processors simply matrix the sound to 7 speakers.

It's still pretty cool, though.

Edit: It's basically a more split-up rear surround format.
