Originally I was looking at 2x Asus VH238H,
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...117&Tpk=VH238H

I've heard of IPS panel monitors, but aren't those not as good for gaming?

I've just heard of ghosting/backlight bleeding/high response time problems that make me not wnat to spend extra. I don't want a slightly better picture with extra problems for $400.

So is the Asus VH238H just fine?

The VH238H is pretty decent for what it is. IPS does give you better color accuracy and viewing angles. IPS monitors are also typically more expensive models and thus better made from a quality control point of view.

An IPS will have slower response times than the TN like the VH238H, but it's not typically noticeably slower unless you have a particularly slow IPS and a particularly fast TN sitting side-by-side.

and now after deciding to go with Dell U2311H I can't find out how to buy it

$240 is a bit pricey for a hive of bees imo, if I wanted that buzzing sound i'd go to buzz.com or something

I can't stand 1080 and I think you'll appreciate the added space for any task with 1920x1200 (many options)

the direction is towards 1080p they offer more value, if you want more monitor space buy more monitors. I'm buying 2.

What do you mean they offer more value? buying more monitors wont give you more vertical space (unless you stack them which is silly) which can be a priority in many tasks like coding and gaming.

Maybe look at the features also. Some models have 2 HDMI inputs and you can view 2 sources.

1080p monitors are manufactured the most so they're the cheapest to manufacture. And they're sold the most so there's the most competition, therefore you can find better deals for 1080p monitors than for monitors of other resolutions.

I don't really see vertical space as a priority in gaming. First-person and over-the-shoulder games are horizontal in nature, but I can see vertical space being important in RTS games or other top-down camera games.

Stay away from Dell E-IPS monitors. They are infamous for their green/pink tint issues. If you go E-IPS I would look at NEC or LG. I have an NEC EA231WMi and it's easily the best monitor I have ever owned.

I won't argue with you because it is personal preference but saying buying 2 1080 monitors (which is what shwick suggested) is a better value than buying 1 1920x1200 is ridiculous.

If you can get two 1080p monitors for the price of one 1920x1200, yes it is easily better value. Not sure if that's what he suggested though

sorry but i've been researching ips monitors for the past 3 days and the monitor everyone recommended, and that came out on top in my research, was the dell u2311h.

It will either beat yours in response time or ghosting, or other factors relevant to gaming. I dunno which, but it doesn't matter anyways as i'm going with the Asus VH238H now that dell is trying to sell faulty monitors in the u2311h's place.

You can prolly get 3 1080p moniotors for the price of 2 1200p monitors, increased vertical space as an additional monitor.

If you're patient, wait for the Dell U2412M to go on sale. I got it for $320 (Canadian), and it is a very solid 24" IPS monitor that is 1920x1200 as well. I assume that it will go that low in the US soon.

I have it alongside a U2211H ($200) and both are fantastic for the price. I would not go back to TN for the viewing angles alone (some have decent colour, but generally not).

The Dells are generally very good or excellent in all aspects without having any major weakness. The only things worth mentioning are no HDMI (but have displayport), boring but minimalist design (no glossy piano finish, and fairly thin bezel), and matte screens (which I like, but some like glossy). My U2211H also emits a slight noise, and if your ears are sensitive, it may be an issue (for me it's not, and I am obsessed with making my PC quiet).

I'm not patient. I already gave dell a chance and they want to sell a malfunctioning 1st revision monitor in place of the u2311h.

that was the monitor I wanted, I will not compromise by increasing my price range to accommodate for dell's idiotic decision.

i will also not "wait patiently" like a lapdog for a dell sale. I want my monitor now, and the Asus VH238H is, now, the best monitor for me.

Care to link to the "issues" that you are seeing with the U2312HM? Fuzzymath says that the '12 line is superior to the '11 line (which is the general consensus).

The NEC EA231WMi looks great, except I'd prefer a 22" version with the same overall specs (LED backlit, IPS monitor). NEC doesn't seem to offer such a 22" monitor, as yet. Leaving the Dell 2212H as the only choice.
Some of the older 22" monitors offer 1680x1050 (16:10) instead of the now more common 1920x1080 (16:9). Which is preferable? Have all the newer model (with LED backlighting) monitors totally switched over to the 1920x1080 resolution screens?

I much prefer 16:10, but subject to a minimum number of vertical pixels.

So 1080p is acceptable since you still have >1000px vertically. More is better of course!
