should i get a 2.4c and an is7 s478 and o/c the hell out of that, or
should i get a sempr0n 3100+/a64 2800+ and ??? s754 mobo and o/c the hell out of that?

i havent userd the k8 series, so i don't know what's good yet

Define mid-budget.....

$200 (Socket 754 A64 entry level)
$250-300 (Socket 939 entry level)

If you go intel it would be worth your time and money to stay away from socket 775 simply because you would have to get DDR2 and PCI-E (although if this an entire system from the ground up disregard that)

I would expect Intel prices to be relatively similiar....

But again... what is budget?

If this system is going to be a one shot deal (meaning, you don't plan to upgrade bits and pieces in the future), I always liked this combo:

The cpu was designed for notebooks, so it should run (on average) cooler than regular 754 cpus, plus it has 1mb of L2 cache. 90nm socket 939 is probably still better overall, but this is a good bang for the buck in my opinion.

edit: i just limited it to s754. what's a good cheap mobo for s754?
