Hi guys. Something weird with my 8kta3. In my system, when I power off and go away and come back, the first time I turn it on, I always get the video card error beep, but it looks like the system is booting. I shut down and power back up right away and it works no problem.

When I shut down, i shut off power at a power bar that connects to my computer. I can't think of anything that's causing the problems, any suggestion?

I have a 1.1ghz tbird running at 1133 at the momemt, 1.8/1.7/3.5V (cpu/agp/io)... Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I caught mine doing a simmilar thing, only it was when I shut down the computer thru windows, the power whent off (it was shut down) then within seconds I pressed the power button and things started whirring about but I got no screen or nothing. Had to pull the power cord to shut down, waited several seconds, plugged it back in pressed the power button and everthing was fine.
I did flash with the latest bios since then but who knows. Other than that I am extremely happy with this set-up, and have not had any other problems.

I found this at Deja.com:

Athlon / Duron Boot Problem Fixed README!!!!

This may have already been posted before, I dont feel like searching
the archive. Here is the situation we had 3 athlon / duron systems
here. two were athlons on SD11 boards one was a Duron on an AZ11
board. The problem we were having was on every 4th or 5th reboot on
every system they would either lock up or reboot halfway through
loading windows. This happened constantly over the 5 days that we were
working on them. Come to find out there is a problem with Athlon based
systems and the Tape Detection scheme that Windows 98 uses on start
up. This also applies to windows 98 to windows ME upgrades because the
files are still there. There are some files that need to be removed
and this will stop the lockups and reboots, at least it did for us.
remove or rename these files so Windows will not load them on boot up,
thus stopping the tape detection scheme.

c:\windows\inf
> pnpwfdc.inf
> pnpwide.inf
> pnpwtape.inf
> pnpwppt.inf
c:\windows\system\iosubsys
> drvwq117.vxd
> drvwppqt.vxd
> drvwcdb.vxd

after renaming these files we were able to get all the systems to over
60 boots including warm and cold without one problem. Hope this can
help someone so they dont have to go through the mess we did.

Luckily I don't suffer from this problem.

I am running:

Duron 650@850
Epox8kta3
CDRW (Panasonic 7585)
CD-Rom (Afreey 50x)
20gig Drive (Maxtor)

Tape detecion scheme? Does that require a Tape Drive?

For now I'm not going to worry too much about it. It may have happened to me like twice so far, and only after shutting completely down, and powering back up within a few seconds. But I guess it's something for all us 8KTA3 owners to keep an eye out for. I'm running mine with a Blue core 750@900 1.75volts and lovin it. Can't wait for my Comuwiz ram comes, and I can play with it some more.

Thanks for the info guys. It can't be the tape detection thingie though because my video just doesn't show up right on power up. It's very odd (and somewhat annoying I might add).

I wonder if this is possibly a BIOS problem...I am running 133fsb, what are you running Killrose?

I think this must be a Duron/Thunderbird thing...
I've seen the same thing on my friends Abit KT7 and Asus K7T systems...but generally running fine...
The Socket A systems appear to "settle down" - which seems a bit weird???

Yes, once I boot there are no problems at all. Just that first boot always seems a little wonky... it's really quite odd, and I have no idea what the problem could be.

I think the BIOS on the Epox board is not implemented very well. I flashed my SCSI card BIOS, and it made the BIOS on my 8kta3 puke. Could not boot. So I RMA'ed the board. Sucks.

Actually, come to thin of it, I did have a *tiny* problem int eh beginning. Beeps after turnign it on and no boot up.

However, it wasn't intermittent like yours.

What I did was I popped the case open and reseated the AGP card. Pushed down FIRMLY, more than normal, but not enoguht to break te card.

No problem after that. Give it a try. If it still doesn't work, try and clean your AGP card's gold connectors. I'm prety sure this has to do with the AGP card.

I did pop it out and cleaned the contacts using an eraser and then shoved the card back in firmly. This problem only occurs if I leave the machine for awhile... like... I dunno, 8 hours or something like that. I power up my power bar, power up my machine, and beep-beep beep beep beep. (the last three are fast. like... beeeeeeeeeep beep beep beep beep). Power down (hold soft swicth down 4 seconds), power up, all is fine. ONLY after leaving it for a period of time. It's the weirdest thing and all I can think of is something is wrong with my motherboard...??

118MHz cas 2 / 120 cas 3. Can't wait till my Compuwiz ram comes. I use this thing a lot, and have probably gone thru about 100+ power up/down cycles so far with no problems on the cold boot.

the postcodes don't give me anything helpful - it says everything is okay! just no video and i get that beeeeeeep beep beep beep. I guess i can try some more things but i was hoping somebody new. Epox tech support says maybe i have a bad regulator on the motherboard.

Come to think of it, these boards don't have an agp divider do they?
My BM6 did, so maybe the agp is running to far out of spec.

Wow!! you got a major motherboard manufacturer to email you back!! Tech support even. Well, i'd have to go on their recommendation. They have a lot of behind the scenes info we will never know. Do you have a pci video card you could try? What about upping the agp voltage, (they might have put that there for a reason, Anands reported they had to up the voltage when they overclocked).
