Need a bit of advice regarding P4 rigs

Looking to get another P4 rig and was wondering if I should stick with 478 and AGP or go with 775 and PCI-E for the long run.....? This will be a non-OC'd rig with a cheap video card and must be Intel based. No need to explain, it just is. I have my AMD rigs for my AMD purposes. Anyway I'm leaning towards longevity and future upgradability and expansion so I wanted room for PCI-E but I am not sure what the standards are going to be on the Intel CPU side in 2 years from now. It's pretty obvious that PCI-E is going to overtake AGP anytime soon hence my move to PCI-E. What is your opinion?
 
IF you're going to run "a cheap video card", I wouldn't worry about going with a 775 MB.
If you're worried about upgrading CPU's in the future, the top of the line socket 478's will only get cheaper.
Realistically, would your tasks exceed what a 3.4EE could do for you?
 
Well, you can still get cheap PCI cards despite AGP having been the standard for a while now, so I'd expect you'll be able to get cheap AGP cards for a while still. If you don't really care much about video card performance, you could stick to 478.

In that case, forget about 478's and 775's... go for dual Xeons or Opterons. :laugh:
Then put those bad boys to work!
 
I already got a dual Xeon box but it's too freakin loud. I've also figured out that it's faster to have several cheap single CPU boxes in the farm than having just a few dualies.
 
northwoods will run cooler, sckt 478 mobos are matured, cheaper...There is your answer..probably something in the 2.8-3.2c range
 
keep in mind that I AM considering this as a long term thing and want something that I can upgrade easily later. I have a feeling that 478/AGP is pretty maxed out and that the next generation standard will be 775/PCI-E/DDR2 especially considering Dell seems to be pushing it. What is the general consensus regarding that? If I do get another 478 rig, should I choose the i875 over the i865?
 
Well that is right....I doubt you will ever be able to place anything in their much better then 3.6-3.8ghz....

Right now I think ddr2, pci-e, and 775 is not matured and highly overpriced...It may be the standard eventually but you will be paying for it now in cost and possible headaches...In a render farm I would want reliability...My nod is for i875 mobos
 
If price is not a major consideration, go with LGA775 and PCIe. Expect to pay more for no performance gain. Also, expect a hotter system ( CPU runs HOT ) - Warmer than a S478 Prescott.
