Not sure about that, but when I see people wearing messenger bags like that, I wonder why they didn't just get a backpack or an actual sling bag.

Unless you're wearing a backpack with only one strap, wearing the messenger bag that way still allows you to maneuver for access easily and it's more secure than wearing a backpack with just one strap. My timbuk2 also had another strap that goes across the waist to add even more security if I need it, like when I'm biking.

Okay, makes sense.

When I started wearing messenger bags a decade ago, I tried doing that for a while and found it extremely uncomfortable.

Yeah, if you have a lot of heavy stuff, it can be uncomfortable. The nice thing on the timbuk2's is that they have a cam buckle that allows you to adjust the length of the strap with one hand, so you can loosen it up on the fly if you need it.

messenger bags are hell if it's heavy and if he has to walk 1 mile in the morning he probably wants to be as fast as possible.

I use a backpack and I don't have any problem with swinging it on the side to protect it and avoid hitting people when turning when I enter public transport or highly crowded areas where body contact is inevitable.
I just make one strap slide down my shoulder and swing it.

I guess the leather briefcase-backpack combo bags would be an idea as a normal backpack will always look a bit off on a suit.

with that amount of crap, I'd probably just get a gym bag -- at least coworkers will think you've got an excuse for carrying it around.

Backpack + professional attire just don't match. I've seen people in wear backpacks in suits, and no matter how nice the bag is, they either look like they're about to rob a bank…

Not this guy:
