I am running win98se with all the updates.

1/ I have trouble with other users always setting the windows screen saver etc. I don't want it used. Is there a way to delete the exe file for the screensaver. I have deleted all the screen files but more can be downloaded.
2/ I can't seem to find how to delete a file. I tried changing the name and deleting and it always denies access to the file. Can it be done through windows. I used to use an old dos ibm program called fileman but I would prefer to be able to do it with explorer or such.

Thanks in advance.

There is a registry setting you can invoke that will turn off the ability to change the screen saver in the display settings. It just makes the tab go away. But it's been so long since I used that to play a prank, I don't have the slightest Idea what and were the hkey was.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\NoDispScrSavPage

I think thats it.

Umm what file are you trying to delete? Has it occured to you that maybe it's in use, or worse a system file, and it should not be deleted?

Either that or its already been deleted and windows simply isn't recognizing the changes, if access was denied because the file was in use an error message is usually printed saying just that, but if a file is not in use than its fair game for the delete key 🙂

Thanks a bunch for the answers. I'll try the registry trick that should certainly work.
The file I'm trying to delete is an old modem file. It's possible that it's either a system or a hidden file but under properties that does't show . Is there a place in windows where I can change that?

if you really want to delete it after having found that it isn't needed, try booting into safe mode and deleteing it there when the system isn't using it.
