Need 17" laptop with Windows XP

We need a new data acquisition laptop at work. Because we interface with a lot of legacy instrumentation, we don't want to make the switch to Vista just yet. And I'd like a 17" screen, since our acquisition software has a pretty cluttered interface and this computer won't be moved very often.

However, it seems like the major laptop manufacturers don't sell anything that fits the bill. Dell apparently won't put XP on any of their 17" laptops. HP will, but they don't offer customization (i.e., you are stuck paying for features you don't need). IBM doesn't seem to have any cheap 17" laptops.

Ideally, this should be a pretty bare-bones machine. We'd like a dual-core processor and at least 1GB of RAM, but we don't care about HDD, graphics, sound, etc. Is there a company that sells what I'm looking for?

Thanks in advance

Hmm, nevermind, I see that Dell is now offering XP on more of its laptop lines. Yay for Microsoft screwing the pooch with Vista!

Definitely look at the Vostro 1700 for $749 (more features over the cheapest $729)

C2D T5270
XP Home (extra $99 for Pro)
17" WXGA+ (free upgrade)
2gb 2 DIMM
DVD-RW
8400M GS
250gb 5400rpm or 160gb 7200rpm (same price)
Dell Wireless g

Very good deal and well below your goal of $1000

Yeah OSx86, that's what I ended up buying. They had a $500 off $1300 promo on the Vostro 1700. So I just started with the ~$800 base model, added $500 worth of upgrades, to end up at a final price of........$800!

Dell and their fuzzy math. I think I got a good deal though!
