Why do people use 1280x1024? It's an incorrect aspect ratio for almost all monitors. It makes everything slightly short and fat.

1280x960 is the correct aspect ratio for the vast majority of monitors out there.

For me that's the next size up that Windows offers for my monitor.

Really? What video card are you using? I've never had a VC that didn't offer 1280x960 if it went that high.

I use a Dell Inspiron notebook with a port replicator.

Video card: ATI Rage Mobility Pro M1 and it tops out at 1600x1200.
Monitor: Mag-Innovision 19''

Yes well 1600x1200 is just too darn small on a 19'' monitor. ;)

A lot of people out there have 17 and 18" LCD monitors. That's the only rez they can use.

My Radeon will do 1280x960, but my Samsung 955df won't. I can force it, but then it only has 60hz refresh and gives me a nice headache.

Yeah, I've always wondered why they make you use an incorrect AR. Hmmm.

Hmm this is odd. My monitor/vid card won't do 1280 x 960 either! I have a 19" KDS VisulaSensations monitor, a GOOD one, and a Radeon 8500! I can go anywhere from 800 x 600 to 2048 x 1536, but not down to 640 x 480 (on the desktop). I can go 1280 X 768 or 1280 x 1024. I've got it on 1024 x 768 right now. It also doesn't like to give me a 100 Hz refresh rate at 1024 x 768 - I have to "unlock" it. I didn't have any of these problems on my GeForce 3.

I wish 1280x1024 wasn't so common. 640x480, 1024x768, the next logical step in relation to 1280 would be 1280x960, as pointed out already in this thread.

If you don't have the option, which many people don't, just load "generic" drivers. I have a 15" monitor and it somehow lets the options go up to 2048x res or whatever it is. 1024x768 is in the MIDDLE of the slider. I use 1280x960, it's perfect for my 15" Optiquest. I get 70Hz too, it's not great, but better than 60Hz at 1280x1024 which isn't even proportional. :)

Running 3200x1200 here....now try to find wallpapers for THAT resolution! (2x 1600x1200)

I've got a 19" & a 17", both will do 1280x960 (Geforce 2 GTS + NEC FP950 & Voodoo 3 + NEC FE750). I know most of you guys think 1600x1200 on a 17" monitor is just TINY, but I only use winamp (Playlist set to size 18 font) & AIM (133% font sizes) on that monitor, so it just has the effect of making icons smaller & fonts smoother, yet still readable. 1600x1200 on the 19" though is very easy to read.

no, 1280x1024 does since it distorts all images on your screen!!
